The Phantom Tollbooth (A Book Review)


1. About the Book

  • Book Name: The Phantom Tollbooth
  • Author: Norman Juster
  • When Written: More than 50 years ago (around the 1960s)
  • Type: A fun fantasy story for kids
  • Message: Helps kids see school and studies in a new, exciting way

2. Main Character

  • Name: Milo
  • Where He Lives: San Francisco, USA
  • About Him:
    • An only child with lots of toys.
    • He feels bored all the time.
    • Thinks everything, especially school, is a waste of time.
    • Lives in a time with no TV, video games, or computers.

3. The Story Starts

  • One day, Milo gets a big surprise package with a blue envelope.
  • The envelope says: “FOR MILO, WHO HAS PLENTY OF TIME.”
  • Inside the package:
    • A tollbooth (like a gate you pay to pass).
    • Signs, coins, a map, and rules.
  • Milo sets up the tollbooth, picks a random place on the map, and drives his toy car through it.
  • Suddenly, the tollbooth, his room, and house disappear! He’s on a highway to a strange land.

4. Where the Story Happens

  • Place: A magical place called the “Kingdom of Wisdom.”
  • Special Parts:
    • Lands like the Doldrums.
    • Castles in the air where princesses Rhyme and Reason are trapped.

5. People and Creatures Milo Meets

  • Lethargarians: Lazy people in the Doldrums who:
    • Daydream, nap, delay things, and waste time.
    • Complain they’re too busy to do nothing!
  • Princesses Rhyme and Reason: Milo has to rescue them.

6. Why “Phantom” Tollbooth?

  • It’s called “phantom” because it appears and disappears mysteriously, like a ghost.

7. Fun and Strange Things

  • The Lethargarians do nothing but:
    • Daydream, nap, linger, loiter, dillydally, procrastinate (put things off).
    • One word for it: Laziness.
  • Funny Lines:
    • “Your wasted time will be refunded.”
    • “There was no highway attached to the booth.”

8. What Happens Next?

  • Milo goes on adventures in the Kingdom of Wisdom.
  • He tries to save the princesses.
  • Does he succeed? Does life get fun for him? Read the book to find out!
