Read the passage and answer the following questions :
(a) What is ‘Param Vir Chakra’?
Answer : Param Vir Chakra (PVC) is India’s highest military award. It is given to soldiers for showing great bravery and sacrifice in war.
(b) What is seen on the obverse and reverse of the PVC medal?
Answer : On the obverse (front side), the PVC medal has the Indian national emblem in the center with four replicas of ‘Indra’s Vajra’ around it.
On the reverse (back side), the words “Param Vir Chakra” are engraved in Hindi and English, with two lotus flowers in between.
(c) Who designed the PVC medal?
Answer : The PVC medal was designed by Savitribai Khanolkar. She was a European lady who married an Indian Army officer and loved Indian culture.
(d) What makes Indra’s Vajra or weapon invincible?
Answer : Indra’s Vajra became invincible because it was made from the bones of Sage Dadhichi. He sacrificed his life and gave his bones to create this powerful weapon.
2. Write the story of Sage Dadhichi’s sacrifice in your own words.
Answer : A long time ago, a demon stole all the water in the world, and people were suffering. This demon could not be defeated by any ordinary weapon. It was known that Sage Dadhichi had powerful bones. When he heard about this, he willingly gave up his life so that his bones could be used to make a strong weapon. Indra used this weapon to defeat the demon and bring water back to the world.
6. What can you do to show your love, respect and support to the soldiers who fight for the country? Discuss this in the classroom. For example, you can send greeting cards to them on various occasions, with the help of your teacher.
Answer : We can send greeting cards to soldiers on special occasions.
We can respect and remember their sacrifices.
