The Worth of a Fabric


POINTERS


1. Form pairs. Present in the class, the conversation between Thiruvalluvar and the young man.
Answer : खालील तुमच्या अनुभवासाठी एक उदाहरण आहे, पण ईविद्यर्थी तुम्हाला तुमचा स्वतःचा अनुभव लिहिण्यास प्रवृत्त करते.
Young Man: How much does this fabric cost?
Thiruvalluvar: Eight coins.
Young Man: (tears fabric into two) Now, what is the price?
Thiruvalluvar: Four coins.
Young Man: (tears again) And now?
Thiruvalluvar: Two coins.
Young Man: (keeps tearing) And now?
Thiruvalluvar: It has become worthless. No one can use it now.
Young Man: (ashamed) I will pay eight coins.
Thiruvalluvar: Money cannot bring back the hard work of many people. Life is like this fabric. If you waste it, you cannot get it back.


2. Describe the following with the help of the story.
Thiruvalluvar

Answer :  Thiruvalluvar
A wise and kind weaver.
Never got angry or used bad words.
Taught the young man a lesson about hard work and respect.

The Rich Young Man
Careless and proud.
Liked making fun of others.
Learned a lesson and decided to change his ways.

The Fabric
Made with great care by Thiruvalluvar and his wife.
Required hard work from many people (farmers, spinners, dyers, weavers).
Became worthless when it was torn into small pieces.


3. Read aloud the speech in which Thiruvalluvar explains how the fabric was made.
Present the process in the form of a chart. Draw pictures for the chart and label them.
Answer :  Cotton farming – Farmers grow cotton in fields.
Cotton picking – Cotton is picked from plants.
Spinning – Cotton is cleaned, combed, and turned into thread.
Dyeing – Threads are colored beautifully.
Weaving – Threads are woven into fabric with designs.
Selling – The fabric is sold in the market.
(You can draw a chart with pictures and these steps)


4. Classify the words in (a) and (b) into ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ words.
(a) great, beautiful, arrogant, impatient, quiet, worthless, proud, happy, thoughtless, hasty
Answer :  Positive words: great, beautiful, quiet, happy
Negative words: arrogant, impatient, worthless, proud, thoughtless, hasty

(b) shouted at, wasted, answered, offered, smiled, refused, toiled, grew, dyed, rewarded, destroyed
Answer :  Positive words: answered, offered, smiled, toiled, grew, dyed, rewarded
Negative words: shouted at, wasted, refused, destroyed


5. Write the antonyms of the following words:
Answer : politely – rudely
calmly – angrily
softly – loudly
carefully – carelessly


6. Find the following adverbs in the story. What verbs do they tell us more about? Write down the pairs of verbs and adverbs.
Answer : ago – tells more about “lived” (He lived more than two thousand years ago.)
greatly – tells more about “loved” (It is greatly loved and respected even today.)
today – tells more about “have” (Let’s have some fun today!)
politely – tells more about “answered” (The Saint answered politely.)
calmly – tells more about “went” (Thiruvalluvar calmly went on reducing the price.)
hard – tells more about “worked” (The farmer who grew cotton worked hard for months.)
