4. Narrate the story of Sushruta in your own words.
Answer :  Sushruta was a great physician and surgeon in ancient India. He wrote an important book on medicine and surgery. During that time, doctors treated both humans and animals. One of Sushruta’s students, Shalihotra, became a famous veterinarian. Shalihotra once asked Sushruta what was needed for surgery on a horse. After observing him, Sushruta realized that a good veterinarian must have sharp observation (like an eagle), courage (like a lion), and kindness (like a mother). This knowledge helped in the development of veterinary sciences in India.


5. Write short notes on the following :
(a) Veterinary Science in Ancient India.
Veterinary science in India started very early and was based on Ayurveda. Special books were written about the care of animals. Shalihotra wrote the oldest known book on veterinary medicine, and Nakula from the Mahabharata was also an expert in horse care.

(b) Care of animals in the regime of Emperor Ashoka.
Emperor Ashoka built the first veterinary hospitals in the world. He encouraged the cultivation of herbal medicines for both humans and animals. He also promoted cleanliness and good food for animals to prevent diseases.

(c) Utilization of animal by-products in the ancient world.
In ancient times, people used animals wisely. Milk was turned into butter, ghee, curd, and khoa. Chickens were used for meat, and sheep were used for wool. People avoided wasting animal products.

Note these pairs of words : care-carefully equal-equally. Here we see that the letters ‘-ly’ are added at the end of the word to make another word. A letter or group of letters added at the end of a  word to make another word is called a suffix.
(a) Use the suffix ‘-ly’ to make other words from the following :
