The Donkey

1. Rewrite the poem in the form of a prose passage.
Answer :  Rewrite the poem in prose form: One day, I saw a newborn donkey. His head was too big for his neck to hold. His legs were shaky, long, and loose. He moved unsteadily and staggered as he walked. He tried to play but was unsure how to do it. His coat was soft, grey, and curled at the neck in a lovely way. His face looked hopeful, as if he was thinking deeply about life. He wandered around in search of something and then lay on the ground to rest. He looked small, weak, and slim, and I prayed that the world would be kind to him.


2. List the pairs of rhyming words from the poem.
old – hold
loose – use
bit – it
grey – way
doubt – about
quest – rest
slim – him


3. What does the poet pray for ? Why ?
Answer : The poet prays that the world may be kind to the little donkey because he looks small, weak, and helpless.


4. Have you seen a newborn young one of an animal ?
Answer :  Yes, I have seen a newborn puppy. It was tiny, could not open its eyes, and needed its mother’s care.


5. Talk to your parents and family members and write what you could do when –
you were a day old,          you were one month old
 you were six months old,          you were one year old.
Answer :  When I was a day old: I could only cry and sleep.
When I was a month old: I could move my hands and recognize my mother’s voice.
When I was six months old: I could sit with support and play with toys.
When I was one year old: I could walk with support and say a few words.


6. Form groups and hold debates on the following topics. Make bulleted lists of points in favour (pros) and those against (cons) the given statement. Let the whole class vote on who won the debate.
(a) Man should use animals for his own needs.
Answer : Pros:
Animals help in farming and transport.
Animals provide milk, wool, and other products.

Cons:
It is cruel to harm animals.
Animals should have the right to live freely.

(b) Contact with man has helped animals to survive
Answer : Pros:
Humans provide food and shelter for animals.
Zoos and reserves protect endangered species.

Cons:
Some humans harm animals for profit.
Animals in captivity lose their natural instincts.


7. Find what the young ones of the following animals are called :

9. Write a conversation between :

Answer :(a) A donkey and a dog

Donkey: Hi, friends, How are you? I haven’t seen you in a long time.
Dog: I’m fine. How are you?
Donkey: What are you doing here?
Dog: I’m hungry and was wondering if there is something to kill my hunger.
Donkey: Oh, that’s bad. I hope you find a bone fast!
Dog: Are you still caring a lot?
Donkey: Yes, my master is very implacable towards me.
Dog: Oh, poor creature, that’s bad for today.
Donkey: Bye; I have to go across the pond.
Dog: Bye; see you soon.

(b) A donkey and a horse
Donkey: Hi horse! You are looking tired. Why? You have an easy job.
Horse: What do you mean, easy?
Donkey: You only have to carry the master’s weight. That too, not every day. Look at me.
Horse: But I have to run fast and faster. Not like you. You just lift a weight and walk along with your master at a slower speed.
Donkey: Agreed. But I don’t even feel like doing that much.
Horse: How lazy you are!
Donkey: Yes. I am.


10. If you saw someone abusing an animal, what would you do ? Write about it in 5 lines.
Answer : If I saw someone hurting an animal, I would stop them immediately. I would tell them that animals also have feelings and should be treated with kindness. If needed, I would inform an elder or a teacher about it. I would also try to take care of the injured animal and provide food and water.
