1. Find the following lists from the passage and copy them.

Everyday things made of glass:

  • Light bulbs
  • Bottles
  • Jars
  • Glasses (for drinking and reading)

  • Marbles

What you can do with hot liquid glass:

  • Pour it into molds
  • Roll it into sheets
  • Press it
  • Blow it into different shapes
  • Draw it into thin fibers (glass wool)

2. Guess the meaning of the following words from the passage:

  • Molten – Something that is melted due to high heat.
  • Transparent – Something you can see through.
  • Impermeable – Something that does not allow water or liquids to pass through.
  • Impart – To give or add something (example: glass does not impart any smell to food).
  • Recyclable – Something that can be reused after processing.

3. Write short notes on the following using suitable diagrams.

How glass is made:

  • Glass is made by heating sand, soda, and lime in a furnace until it melts.
  • The melted glass is then shaped and cooled to become hard.

How glass is shaped:

  • Hot glass is shaped by pouring, rolling, pressing, or blowing into different objects.
  • It can also be made into thin fibers (glass wool) or smooth sheets.

Some properties of glass:

  • Transparent – You can see through it.
  • Strong and hard – Can hold weight.
  • Impermeable – Does not allow water to pass through.
  • Smooth – Can be cleaned easily.
  • Recyclable – Can be reused to make new glass.

4. Find out how paper and plastic are recycled.

Paper Recycling:

  • Old paper is collected and cleaned.
  • It is mixed with water and chemicals to make pulp.
  • The pulp is pressed, dried, and turned into new paper.

Plastic Recycling:

  • Used plastic is collected and sorted.
  • It is melted and reshaped into new plastic products.
  • Recycling plastic helps reduce pollution.

5. Prepare a poster each to urge people to –

(a) Use glass carefully – ‘Handle Glass with Care!’


Slogan: “Glass is useful, but breaks with ease, Handle it with care, if you please!”

(b) Recycle glass.


Slogan: “Recycle glass, save energy, and keep the Earth clean!”
