1. Read the story and say whether the following statements are true or false.

2. Solve the Puzzle

(Students need to find the word “NIGHTINGALE” from the letters given.)


3. The nightingale gave the nobleman two bits of advice. Form groups and discuss each of them. Can you think of a story/event/any experience related to each ? Write it down. Try to find similar sayings or proverbs in your mother tongue.

Advice 1: “Never cry over spilt milk.”


✔ This means do not feel bad about something that cannot be changed.
✔ Example: If you drop your ice cream, feeling sad will not bring it back.

Advice 2: “Never trust idle words.”


✔ This means do not believe words that have no proof.
✔ Example: If a friend says “I found gold in my garden”, do not believe without proof.

Similar Proverbs:

  • “What’s done cannot be undone.”
  • “Think before you believe.”

4. Read aloud the last speech of the nightingale with proper intonation.

(Students should practice reading the last part of the story with proper expression.)


5. Use the given words in place of the highlighted words and translate each sentence you make.

Original Sentence: The bird flew a little higher.


✔ New Sentences:

  • The bird flew much higher.
  • The bird flew just a little higher.
  • The bird flew a lot higher.

Original Sentence: I never trust idle words.


✔ New Sentences:

  • I often trust idle words.
  • I always trust idle words.

Original Sentence: The bird flew away.


✔ New Sentences:

  • The bird flew up.
  • The bird flew far away.
  • The bird flew left.

6. Try to collect at least 20 proverbs or sayings in English.

✔ Students can collect proverbs like:

  • “Honesty is the best policy.”
  • “A stitch in time saves nine.”
  • “Slow and steady wins the race.”

7. Use some other suitable word/words in place of the highlighted words at every step.

Original Sentence: If you let me go, I will tell you the secret of happiness.


✔ Step 1: If you let me go, I will tell you a secret.
✔ Step 2: If you let me go, I will give you something.
✔ Step 3: If you let me sleep, I will give you something.

Original Sentence: How stupid of me!


✔ Step 1: How silly of me!
✔ Step 2: How foolish of me!
✔ Step 3: How funny of me!

Original Sentence: The nobleman watched as the bird flew away.


✔ Step 1: The nobleman watched as the bird flew up.
✔ Step 2: The nobleman looked as the bird went away.
✔ Step 3: The nobleman stared as the bird disappeared.


8. What bits of advice do you often get from your family and friends? Write down 3 of the bits in your mother tongue. Try to translate the bits into English.

✔ Example Advice:


1️⃣ Marathi: “सतत अभ्यास करा.” → English: “Always study regularly.”
2️⃣ Hindi: “हमेशा सच बोलो।” → English: “Always speak the truth.”
3️⃣ Tamil: “நல்ல நண்பர்களை தேர்வு செய்.” → English: “Choose good friends.”


9. Note the plurals
