1. Fill in the blanks with solid, liquid, or gas:
Answer – 
Ball (solid)

2. Discuss:
Answer – 
(a) When Riya pours water into another bottle, the water takes the shape of the new bottle, but its volume stays the same.
(b) When Halima puts the stone in water, its shape does not change because solids have a fixed shape.


3. Properties of Substances:
Answer – 
Water – Liquid, transparent, flows easily.
Glass – Solid, transparent, brittle.
Chalk – Solid, brittle, breaks easily.
Iron ball – Solid, hard, metallic.
Sugar – Solid, dissolves in water, sweet.
Salt – Solid, dissolves in water, salty.
Flour – Solid, soft, powdery.
Coal – Solid, black, burns to give heat.
Soil – Solid, contains small particles, does not dissolve in water.
Pen – Solid, used for writing.
Ink – Liquid, used for writing.
Soap – Solid, dissolves in water, used for cleaning.


4. What is sublimation? Write the names of everyday substances that sublimate.
Answer – Sublimation: – Sublimation is the process where a solid directly changes into a gas without becoming a liquid.
Examples: Camphor, naphthalene balls, dry ice (solid carbon dioxide), iodine.


5. What is it made from? Why?
Answer – 
(a) Sickle – Made of iron; strong and sharp for cutting.
(b) Roofing sheets – Made of metal; durable and protects from rain and sun.
(c) Screwdriver – Made of steel; strong for tightening screws.
(d) Tongs – Made of iron; used for holding hot objects.
(e) Electric cables – Made of copper or aluminum; good conductors of electricity.
(f) Ornaments – Made of gold or silver; shiny and easy to shape.
(g) Pots and pans – Made of metal; good conductors of heat.


6 What will happen if….? And why ?
Answer – 
(a) If nails were made of plastic, they would bend and not work well.
(b) If a bell were made of wood, it would not make a ringing sound.
(c) If rubber was not fitted on tongs, they would be too hot to hold.
(d) If a knife was made of wood, it would not cut properly.
(e) If an axe was made of rubber, it would not be strong enough to cut anything.


7. Who am I ?
Answer – 
(a) Mercury – Found in a thermometer, measures temperature.
(b) Heat – Makes things hot or cold.
(c) Gas – Has no shape.
(d) Salt – Dissolves in water but not in kerosene.


8. Why does this happen?
Answer – 
(a) Coconut oil thickens in winter because it becomes solid at low temperatures.
(b) Kerosene disappears when left open because it evaporates into the air.
(c) Fragrance of incense sticks spreads because gas particles move in all directions.
(d) Water evaporates from the ground due to heat from the sun.
