Understanding News


What is News?

  • News is information about events happening around us.
  • Not everything written or shown in the news is always true.
  • We must think carefully before believing any news.

Words to Remember:

  • Authorities: People in charge (like the police or government).
  • Eye-witness: A person who saw something happen.
  • Account: A report or story about what happened.

Four News Stories from the Chapter


(a) Closed Shoes Not Allowed in Exams

Story:

  • A Bengaluru institute made rules for exam halls.
  • No closed shoes, socks, gadgets (like phones or calculators), or personal pens are allowed. Pens are provided in the hall.

Why These Rules?

  • To stop cheating.
  • Gadgets and hidden items in shoes or socks can be used unfairly.

Questions to Think About:

  • What other steps can be taken to prevent cheating?
  • Why is it important to publish such news in newspapers?

(b) Ritika Quits Acting

Story:

  • Ritika, a famous Bollywood actress, announced she will stop acting after her next movie, “Ant.”
  • She may join politics.
  • She didn’t give an official reason for her decision.

What to Discuss:

  • Why do you think Ritika quit acting? (Health, new interests, etc.)
  • How do you think her fans feel about this news?

(c) Most Dangerous Time in History

Story:

  • Famous scientist Stephen Hawking said the world faces big dangers:
    1. Climate change.
    2. Overpopulation.
    3. Diseases.
  • He warned that humans must work together to save our planet because we don’t have another one to live on.

Questions to Think About:

  • Which problem is the most serious?
  • What can we do to protect Earth?

(d) Quick Cure for All Diseases?

Story:

  • A man named Miribaba claims his special powder cures all diseases.
  • He sells it for Rs. 25 but doesn’t reveal what it is made of.
  • A local doctor said there is no proof the powder works, and more people are visiting the hospital instead.

Important Lesson:

  • Don’t believe everything without proof.
  • Always consult a doctor when you are sick.

  • News can make you happy, sad, or angry.
  • Think about how it affects you and others.

Reliable and Unreliable News:

  • Some news is true and can be trusted.
  • Other news might not be true. Always check facts before believing it.

Be Smart About News:

  • Question what you read or hear.
  • Discuss news with others to understand it better.

  • News is divided into categories:
    • Local (city news).
    • National (country news).
    • International (world news).
    • Science, sports, and entertainment.
