1. From the passage, find all the words and phrases used to describe the ‘monster’.

Answer : 

  • Unearthly animal

2. How long does the whole event described in this passage take? Work it out by reading the passage.

Answer : 

The event spans from nightfall to 10:50 p.m., when the electric light of the monster reappears.

3. How did the battle between the ship and the monster end ? Find and copy the lines where you find the answer to this question.

Answer : 

The passage states:

  • “The electric light suddenly went out, and two enormous waterspouts crashed onto the deck of the frigate…”
  • “A hideous collision occurred, and I was hurled into the sea.”

4. What attempts did the ship make to defeat the ‘monster?’ Find and copy lines from the passage describing at least two of the attempts.

Answer : 

Attempt 1: Firing the forecastle cannon.

  • “The cannoneer fired a shot, but his shell passed some feet above the cetacean.”

Attempt 2: Using harpoons.

5. Find the different units of measurement mentioned in the passage and get more information about them from the internet.

1. Where do we find such timetables displayed? What information do they give?

Answer : 

Location: Railway stations, websites, or mobile apps.

Information Provided: Train names, numbers, departure/arrival times, and station names.

2. Form pairs and quiz your partner with the help of the timetable using the following
question types.

Example :

  • Name the train that leaves Mumbai CSMT at 7:05 a.m..
    • Answer: Mandavi Express.
  • Find a station that begins with “K”.
    • Answer: Kankavali.
  • Find a train that arrives at Ernakulam.
    • Answer: Netravati Express.

 3. Ahmed lives in Panvel. He invites his cousin Saurabh. Saurabh doesn’t know Marathi too well. He lives in Murdeshwar. So they discuss Saurabh’s travel plans in English. Write their conversation using the timetable on page 102.

Answer : 

Ahmed: Hi Saurabh! You can take the Mandavi Express from Murdeshwar to reach Panvel. It departs at 6:45 a.m. and arrives at Panvel by 5:18 p.m.

Saurabh: Thanks, Ahmed! Do I need to book tickets in advance?

Ahmed: Yes, it’s better. You can also check for sleeper coaches if needed.

4. List words related to railway / bus journey, for example, passengers, advance booking, boarding, etc.

Answer : Passengers, advance booking, berth, coach, platform, railway crossing, station, schedule, reservation.

5. Write the opposite word / phrase in the following pairs.
