Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, the former President of India, admired great scientists like Dr. C. V. Raman. Raman was born in Tiruchirapalli, India, in 1888. He was a brilliant student interested in science, especially in optics (the study of light) and acoustics (the study of sound). His curiosity made him ask many questions about the world around him.
One day, while traveling by ship, he wondered why the sea and sky are blue. He conducted experiments and discovered that light scatters due to water molecules. This discovery, called the Raman Effect, won him the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1930, making him the first Asian to receive this honor. February 28, the day he announced the Raman Effect, is celebrated as National Science Day.
Raman believed that science requires independent thinking and hard work, not just expensive equipment. His experiments used tools that cost only 200 rupees, proving that creativity and curiosity are more important than resources.
