Jijabai ensured that Shivaji Maharaj received the best education. She taught him values like truth, courage, and leadership. She also made sure he learned about politics, administration, and warfare.

(2) Shivaji Maharaj started his work of founding Swaraj in the Maval region.

Shivaji Maharaj began his mission in Maval, a region full of hills and valleys. He used the land’s natural features wisely and gained the trust of the people. Many brave companions joined him in building Swaraj.


3. List the companions and associates of Shivaji Maharaj.


Shivaji Maharaj had many loyal companions, including Yesaji Kank, Baji Pasalkar, Bapuji Mudgal, Narhekar Deshpande brothers, Kavji Kondhalkar, Jiva Mahala, Tanaji Malusare, Kanhoji Jedhe, Bajiprabhu Deshpande, and Dadaji Narasprabhu Deshpande.

(1) Why is Shahaji Maharaj called a Swaraj visionary?

Shahaji Maharaj dreamed of a free kingdom and worked to protect Indian rule from foreign powers. He inspired Shivaji Maharaj and gave him the right education to fulfill this vision.

(2) Why did Shivaji Maharaj focus on building a navy?

Shivaji Maharaj realized that foreign powers like the Portuguese and British had strong naval forces. To defend Swaraj and control trade routes, he decided to build a powerful navy.

(3) Why did Shivaji Maharaj sign a treaty with the Adilshah?

After escaping from Panhalgad, Shivaji Maharaj had to face the Mughals as well. To avoid fighting two enemies at the same time, he signed a treaty with the Adilshah and returned Panhala Fort.

(4) How did Shivaji Maharaj escape from Panhalgad?

Shivaji Maharaj cleverly deceived the enemy by sending Shiva Kashid, who looked like him, in a palanquin. Meanwhile, he escaped using a difficult route with Baji Prabhu Deshpande, who later fought bravely to delay the enemy’s attack.
