  • Practice water conservation and plant more trees.

  • Stay indoors, avoid trees and open fields during a thunderstorm.
  • Do not use electrical appliances or metal objects.

(c) Storm

  • Stay in a safe shelter and avoid outdoor activities.
  • Listen to weather updates and follow government warnings.

(d) Cloudburst

  • Avoid low-lying areas and move to higher ground.
  • Strengthen drainage systems to prevent flooding.

(a) What is a tsunami? What gives rise to a tsunami?

→ A tsunami is a huge ocean wave caused by an underwater earthquake, volcanic eruption, or landslide.

(b) What is a cloudburst?

→ A cloudburst is sudden and very heavy rainfall in a small area, caused by rapid condensation of water vapor in clouds.

(c) Explain the effects of a volcano.

  • Lava, hot gases, and ash destroy forests and buildings.
  • Air pollution increases, and new landforms like mountains can be created.

(d) What are the measures to prevent loss of life due to lightning?

  • Avoid open fields, trees, and water bodies during a thunderstorm.
  • Stay indoors and do not use mobile phones or electrical appliances.

5. What measures have been taken to deal with calamities such as floods and landslides under the disaster management program in Maharashtra?


  • Construction of small dams and percolation tanks to control water flow.
  • Afforestation (planting trees) to prevent soil erosion and landslides.
  • Early warning systems for floods and landslides.

6. With reference to disaster management, what are the things in your house that you will check?


  • Emergency first-aid kit and food supplies.
  • Availability of flashlights, batteries, and drinking water.
