3. Explain the following statements with reasons.


1. Chafekar brothers killed Rand.

  • In 1897, Plague Commissioner Rand used harsh and tyrannical methods while controlling the plague in Pune. In response, Damodar and Balkrishna Chafekar shot him dead as an act of revenge against British oppression.

2. Khudiram Bose was hanged to death.

  • Khudiram Bose and Prafulla Chaki, members of Anushilan Samiti, attempted to assassinate Judge Kingsford by throwing a bomb at his vehicle. Although the target was missed, Khudiram was caught by the police and later hanged in 1908.

3.Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutta threw bombs in the Central Legislative Assembly.

  • To protest against two oppressive bills introduced by the British, Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutta threw non-lethal bombs in the Central Legislative Assembly. This act aimed to draw public attention to the unjust laws.

4. Answer the following questions in brief.


1. Write a detailed description of the attack on Chittagong Armoury.

  • On 18 April 1930, Surya Sen and his associates attacked two British armouries in Chittagong (now in Bangladesh). They cut telephone and telegraph lines to disrupt communication and seized arms. Despite fierce resistance, many revolutionaries, including Kalpana Dutta and Pritilata Waddedar, fought bravely. Surya Sen was captured and executed in 1933, inspiring further revolutionary actions.

2. Explain the contribution of Swatantryaveer Savarkar in the armed revolutionary movement.

  • Swatantryaveer V. D. Savarkar founded Mitramela, later renamed Abhinav Bharat, to organize an armed struggle against the British. While studying in England, he sent revolutionary literature and weapons to India. His book, ‘The 1857 War of Independence’, inspired future revolutionaries. Despite being imprisoned for 50 years, Savarkar continued to promote social reform and national unity.
