2. Explain the following statements with reasons.


1. Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti came to be established.

  • The JVP Committee report rejected the immediate formation of linguistic states, leading to public dissatisfaction.
  • To unite and intensify the struggle for a separate Maharashtra with Mumbai, the Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti was formed on 6 February 1956 under the leadership of Keshavrao Jedhe.

2. The role of newspapers was important in Samyukta Maharashtra Movement.

  • Newspapers like Prabodhan, Kesari, Sakal, and Navakal raised public awareness and supported the cause.
  • Acharya Atre’s newspaper Maratha played a crucial role in mobilizing people for the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement.

1. Samyukta Maharashtra Parishad:

  • On 28 July 1946, the Maharashtra Ekikaran Parishad was held in Mumbai under the leadership of Shankarrao Dev.
  • It passed a resolution demanding a united Maharashtra including Mumbai, Marathwada, Vidarbha, and Gomantak.
  • This marked the beginning of the Samyukta Maharashtra movement.

2. Contribution of Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti:

  • The Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti led the struggle for a separate state with Mumbai under leaders like Shripad Amrut Dange, S.M. Joshi, Acharya Atre, and Prabodhankar Thackeray.
  • The Samiti organized strikes, marches, and protests, including the one-day token strike on 21 November 1955.
  • Their efforts led to the formation of Maharashtra on 1 May 1960.
