3. Explain the following statements with reasons.


(1) The Social and religious reform movement began in India.

  • The British brought English education to India.
  • This introduced Indians to new ideas and Western thoughts.
  • Educated Indians saw problems like superstitions and casteism.
  • They wanted to remove these issues for India’s progress.
  • So, they started social and religious reforms.

(2) Mahatma Phule conducted a strike of barbers.

  • Mahatma Phule fought against unjust customs.
  • One custom was shaving the heads of widows.
  • He believed this was unfair to women.
  • He asked barbers to stop doing it.
  • This strike was to support widows and bring equality.

4. Write Short notes.


(1) Ramkrishna Mission

  • It was started by Swami Vivekananda in 1897.
  • Its goal was to serve society and help people.
  • It helped famine victims and poor patients.
  • It also worked for women’s education.
  • The mission taught spiritual growth and humanity.

(2) Reforms for women by Savitribai Phule

  • Savitribai Phule started the first girls’ school in Pune in 1848.
  • She faced criticism but kept working for girls’ education.
  • She supported her husband, Mahatma Phule, in reforms.
  • She opposed customs like shaving widows’ heads.
  • She worked to give women equal rights and respect.
