Answer: Epics are long poems about great national heroes or wars, often telling a nation’s early history. The Iliad and The Odyssey are great epics of European literature from ancient Greece.

2. Explain why Troy was a prosperous city.

Answer: Troy was well-situated for trade with a sea route and had fertile lands with rivers flowing from Mount Ida. This allowed for both commerce and agriculture to flourish.

3. How was Troy protected, and what event led to the war?

Answer: Troy was protected by a strong wall, but the war began because Paris, a prince of Troy, persuaded Helen, the wife of a Greek king, to run away with him.

4. Summarize the events of the ten-year siege.

Answer: The Greeks laid siege to Troy, and for ten years, they fought daily. Neither side could gain a decisive advantage, with great heroes killed on both sides.

5. Describe Odysseus’s plan to enter Troy.

Answer: Odysseus suggested building a large wooden horse to hide Greek fighters inside. The Greeks would then pretend to leave, return at night, and attack the city.

6. What did the Trojans do when they found the wooden horse?

Answer: Thinking the Greeks had left, the Trojans rejoiced and brought the horse into the city, ignoring warnings that it could be a trick.

7. Explain how the Greeks destroyed Troy.

Answer: Under the cover of night, the Greeks came out of the horse, opened the city gates, and their army entered, setting fire to everything and killing the Trojans.

8. What was the fate of Troy’s royal family and Helen?

Answer: King Priam and his sons were killed, and Hector’s family was taken as slaves, but Menelaus forgave Helen, and she returned with him.
