पैरेग्राफ और पैसिज़ कम्पलीशन (Paragraph and Passage Completion) in  English

Definition:

Paragraph and Passage Completion is a type of question commonly found in competitive exams, where a part of a paragraph or passage is missing or incomplete. The candidate needs to choose the correct option that logically completes the given text. These questions assess comprehension, reasoning, and the ability to identify contextual meaning.

How to Solve:

  1. Read the Passage/Paragraph Carefully: Begin by reading the entire passage or paragraph to understand the context and tone.
  2. Identify the Missing Part: Focus on the blank section. Understand what information, opinion, or idea is required to complete the thought logically.
  3. Predict Possible Answers: Before looking at the options, try to predict what the missing part might contain based on the context.
  4. Analyze Each Option: Go through each option and check if it fits grammatically and contextually.
  5. Choose the Most Logical Option: Select the answer that makes the most sense in terms of coherence, logic, and flow of the passage.
  6. Cross-Check: Ensure that the chosen option does not contradict any earlier statements or the overall tone of the passage.

Tricks and Tips:

  • Context is Key: Pay attention to the overall tone and meaning of the passage. Whether it’s formal, informal, humorous, or serious, ensure the chosen option matches the tone.
  • Look for Clues in the Passage: Sometimes, the sentence before or after the blank contains hints about what should fill the gap.
  • Read All Options Carefully: Do not rush through the options. Sometimes, subtle differences make one choice more appropriate than the others.
  • Use Elimination: If you’re unsure about an answer, eliminate the options that seem illogical or grammatically incorrect.
  • Understand Word Connections: Look for transitional words such as “however,” “therefore,” “on the other hand,” etc., which can give clues about how to complete the passage.
  • Practice with Time: These questions often come with a time limit, so practice solving them quickly without sacrificing accuracy.

Solved Example:

Passage:

Despite the increasing awareness of environmental issues, many people continue to engage in activities that harm the environment. For example, deforestation, pollution, and overconsumption of natural resources remain prevalent. These actions contribute to the loss of biodiversity and climate change. Therefore, it is essential that everyone does their part to preserve the environment. _____

Options:
A) Governments must regulate industries strictly.
B) All individuals should be aware of their environmental footprint.
C) Companies should increase production of eco-friendly products.
D) Environmental awareness programs should be more effective.

Solution:
The correct answer is B) All individuals should be aware of their environmental footprint.
This option logically follows from the previous sentence about the need for everyone to do their part to preserve the environment.
