  1. Lakshadweep islands are one of the four coral reef regions in India. It consists of over 600 species of marine fishes, 78 species of corals, 400 species of flowering plants, 82 species of seaweed, and 101 species of birds in addition to various species of seaweeds, lobsters, gastropods, etc.
  2. Lakshadweep forms an ecoregion with the Maldives and the Chagos, which is a tropic broad-leaved forest ecoregion in South Asia.
  3. The state animal of Lakshadweep islands is the butterfly fish, and the state bird is the sooty tern. The state tree is bread fruit.
  4. Lakshadweep has a few endemic plant species, such as the Lakshadweep Cycad, which are not found anywhere else in the world.
  5. The islands are one of the few places in India where pole and line fishing for tuna is practiced, making it a unique fishing method specific to this region.
  6. More than five different species of Butterfly Fish, the state animal, are found in the coral reefs of Lakshadweep.
  7. The islands occasionally experience algal blooms, which, although detrimental to coral reefs, are a natural phenomenon that indicates nutrient-rich waters.
  8. The endangered Dugong, or sea cow, has been occasionally sighted in the waters around the islands, indicating the ecological richness of the region.
  9. The Pitti Island in the Lakshadweep, which has been declared as a bird sanctuary, is an important breeding place for sea turtles and for a number of pelagic birds such as the brown noddy (Anous stolidus), lesser crested tern (Sterna bengalensis) and greater crested tern (Sterna bergii).
  10. Lakshadweep islands are also known for whales (Pygmy blue whale, Bryde’s whale, Sperm whale, Orca, and Pilot whale) and dolphins.
  11. Snakes and animals like dogs are completely absent from Lakshadweep Islands. While cats can be commonly seen, the island is heavily invested with rats and mosquitoes.
