Decimals In English

The word “decimal” comes from the Latin words “deci” meaning “ten” and “mal” meaning “part.”

A decimal number is a number written in the decimal system, which is a system based on the number 10.

In the decimal system, each digit has a place value determined by its position to the right of a decimal point. The decimal point separates the whole number part (to the left) from the fractional part (to the right).

Parts of a decimal

1. Whole number part: This is the part of the number to the left of the decimal point.
2. Fractional part: This is the part of the number to the right of the decimal point. Each digit in this part represents a fraction of 1, with the digit’s place value determining the specific fraction it represents.

Place values:

1. The rightmost digit represents ones (1/1).
2. The digit to its left represents tenths (1/10).
3. The digit next to that represents hundredths (1/100).
4. Each digit to the right continues decreasing in value by a factor of 10.

Examples:

1. 5.2: This decimal has 5 as the whole number part and 2 as the fractional part. The 2 represents two tenths (2/10).

2. 0.75: This decimal has 0 as the whole number part and 75 as the fractional part. The 7 represents seven tenths (7/10) and the 5 represents five hundredths (5/100).

Types of decimals:

1. Decimal fraction: A fraction whose denominator is a power of 10 (For Examples, 1/10, 3/100).
2. Repeating decimal: A decimal where a group of digits repeats infinitely after the decimal point (For Examples, 3.333…).
3. Terminating decimal: A decimal where the fractional part ends after a finite number of digits (For Examples., 2.5).

Decimal numbers are widely used in various fields, including:

Calculations: Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Measurements: Length, weight, time, etc.
