Time and Work for Competitive Exam – Quantitative Aptitude

Time and Work In English

Time and work problems are a fundamental concept in quantitative aptitude, frequently encountered in competitive exams. They involve analyzing the relationship between the time taken to complete a task, the work done, and the rate at which an individual or group works.

Key Concepts:

Work (W): The total amount of effort or task required to be completed. It can be measured in various units depending on the context, such as distance traveled, number of items produced, or area painted.
Rate (R): The speed at which work is completed. It represents the amount of work done in a unit of time. It can be calculated as: R = W / T.
Time (T): The duration taken to complete the work. It can be calculated as: T = W / R.
Efficiency (E): It represents the rate at which work is done relative to a standard or ideal rate. It is often expressed as a percentage. A higher efficiency indicates faster completion of work.

Time and Work Formula

1. Work (W):

W = R x T (Work equals Rate multiplied by Time)

2. Rate (R):

R = W / T (Rate equals Work divided by Time)

3. Time (T):

T = W / R (Time equals Work divided by Rate)

4. Combined Rate (Rc) (for multiple entities working together):

Rc = R1 + R2 + … + Rn (Combined Rate equals the sum of individual rates)

5. Combined Time (Tc) (for multiple entities working together):

Tc = W / Rc (Combined Time equals Work divided by Combined Rate)
