Background of the Story
- The Devas and Asuras were always fighting.
- The Asuras had an advantage because their teacher Shukracharya knew the magic formula to bring dead people back to life.
- Whenever an Asura died in battle, Shukracharya revived him.
- The Devas had no such knowledge.
- Therefore, they wanted to learn the secret of Sanjivani Vidya.
Kach’s Mission
- The Devas consulted Brihaspati
- It was decided that Kach should go to Shukracharya’s hermitage.
- He would become his student and learn the secret knowledge.
- Kach accepted the mission willingly.
Kach Becomes Shukracharya’s Student
. Kach reached Shukracharya’s hermitage.
. He introduced himself respectfully.
. Shukracharya welcomed him warmly.
. Kach promised to serve his teacher sincerely.
. His duties included:
- Bringing flowers from the forest.
- Collecting firewood.
- Looking after cows.
- Helping in the hermitage.
Friendship with Devayani
- Devayani admired Kach because he was handsome, intelligent, and kind.
- She fell in love with him.
- Kach treated her as a good friend.
- They spent time together and helped each other.
- However, Kach never encouraged her love because he remained focused on his duty.
First Time Kach Was Killed
Plan of the Asuras
- The Asuras discovered the reason for Kach’s stay.
- They decided to kill him.
What Happened?
- While grazing cows in the forest, Kach was attacked.
- The Asuras killed him.
- They cut his body into pieces.
- The pieces were fed to wolves and jackals.
Revival
- Kach did not return home.
- Devayani became worried.
- She requested her father to bring him back.
- Shukracharya used his magic formula.
- Kach returned to life and explained everything.
Second Time Kach Was Killed
What Happened?
- The Asuras again attacked him.
- They killed him and crushed his body.
- His remains were mixed with the waters of the ocean.
Revival
- Devayani again requested her father to save Kach.
- Shukracharya used his power and revived him.
- Kach returned safely.
Third Time Kach Was Killed
New Plan of the Asuras
- The Asuras wanted to make revival impossible.
What Happened?
- They killed Kach again.
- Burnt his body.
- Collected his ashes.
- Mixed the ashes with divine wine.
- Shukracharya unknowingly drank the wine.
Problem
- Kach’s ashes entered Shukracharya’s body.
- Therefore Kach was inside his teacher’s stomach.
Shukracharya’s Difficulty
- Devayani again insisted that Kach must be brought back.
- Shukracharya discovered that Kach was inside him.
- If Kach came out, Shukracharya would die.
- If Kach remained inside, Kach would die.
Devayani’s Decision
- She declared that she could not live without Kach.
- She requested her father to save him.
Learning of Sanjivani Vidya
- Shukracharya decided to teach Kach the secret mantra.
- He taught him Sanjivani Vidya while Kach was inside him.
- Kach learned the magic formula successfully.
Kach Comes Out
- Kach emerged from Shukracharya’s body.
- As a result, Shukracharya died.
Revival of the Teacher
- Using the newly learned mantra, Kach revived Shukracharya.
- Thus both remained alive.
End of Kach’s Education
- Kach completed his studies.
- He stayed for some more time and then prepared to return home.
- Shukracharya blessed him and allowed him to leave.
Devayani Proposes Marriage
- Devayani confessed her love to Kach.
- She asked him to marry her.
- She reminded him that she had saved his life several times.
Kach’s Reply
. Kach respected Devayani greatly.
. However, he refused to marry her.
. He explained that:
- He had come out of her father’s body.
- Therefore, he was like her brother.
- Marriage between them would be wrong.
Devayani’s Curse
- Devayani became angry and disappointed.
- She cursed Kach.
- She said that the knowledge he had learned would not be useful to him.
Kach’s Response
- Kach accepted her anger calmly.
- He said he would teach the knowledge to others.
- In this way, the knowledge would still be useful.
Return to the Devas
- Kach left the hermitage.
- The Devas welcomed him with great honour.
- Lord Indra himself greeted him.
