Notes Class 10 English Chapter 8 Our Feathered Friends Gujarat Board

Our Feathered Friends

Title of the Lesson

Our Feathered Friends

Theme

The lesson is a conversation between Shubhangi, Devangi, and Mitra about birds. It introduces different types of birds, their habitats, nesting habits, migration, importance in nature, and ways humans can help protect them.

Main Characters

1. Shubhangi

  • A curious girl.
  • Loves learning about birds.
  • Asks many questions to gain knowledge.

2. Devangi

  • A zoology student.
  • Interested in bird watching (birding).
  • Shares information about birds with Shubhangi.

3. Mitra

  • Shubhangi’s sister’s friend.
  • Supports the discussion and brings books about birds.

Beginning of the Lesson

  • One pleasant morning, Shubhangi and her family were having breakfast in the garden.
  • Birds were chirping around them.
  • Devangi was staying with Shubhangi’s family for a few days.
  • Shubhangi noticed a bird and thought it was a sparrow.
  • Devangi corrected her and explained that it was a Tailor Bird.

The Tailor Bird

Characteristics

  • Smaller than a sparrow.
  • Yellowish-green in colour.
  • Lives near human habitats.

Nest Building

  • It stitches leaves together using fibres and plant materials.
  • Because it “stitches” leaves, it is called the Tailor Bird.

Male and Female Colours

  • The male and female birds have different colours.
  • In many bird species, females are dull in colour compared to males.

Reason

  • Dull colours help female birds protect themselves from hunters and predators.
  • This helps in the continuation of future generations.

Types of Birds

Devangi explains that there are two major types of birds:

1. Birds of Prey

  • Hunt smaller birds and animals for food.

2. Small Birds

  • Generally live around human settlements and natural habitats.

Indian Grey Hornbill

Appearance

  • Has grey feathers over most of its body.
  • Possesses a special beak with a horn-like structure.

Habitat

  • Found in both urban and forest areas.
  • Prefers large trees.

Nesting Habit

  • Nests in hollows of tall trees.
  • The female enters the hollow and seals it using mud pellets.
  • The male provides food to the female and chicks.

Special Quality

  • The male hornbill takes great care of its family.
  • In some areas, it is called “Vahu Ghelo”, meaning one who takes extra care of his wife.

Weaver Bird

Local Name

  • Known as “Sughari” in Gujarati.

Nest Building

  • Famous for weaving beautiful nests.
  • Uses long thread-like grass leaves.
  • Possesses a special natural skill for nest construction.

Who Builds the Nest?

  • The male weaver bird builds the nest.

Nest Construction Process

  • Takes around 18 days to complete.
  • When half-finished, the male attracts a female by singing.
  • If the female accepts the nest, both birds complete it together.
  • If she rejects it, the nest is abandoned.

Interesting Fact

  • A male may build several nests during the nesting season.

Importance of Vultures

Role in Nature

  • Vultures are scavengers.
  • They eat dead animals and clean the environment.
  • Their beaks are specially designed to tear flesh from carcasses.

Decline in Population

  • People use medicines to treat cattle.
  • When treated cattle die, vultures eat their flesh.
  • A medicine called Diclofenac is harmful to vultures.
  • After eating contaminated flesh, vultures die.
  • Nearly 97% of the vulture population has been lost.

Disappearance of Sparrows

Why Have Sparrows Decreased?

According to Devangi:

  • Humans have destroyed their homes.
  • Modern houses do not provide nesting places.
  • Birds cannot easily enter houses.
  • They do not find safe places to build nests.

How Can We Help Sparrows?

  • Make simple nests using cardboard boxes.
  • Keep grains such as rice and millet for them.
  • Place water in bowls or dishes.
  • Create a safe environment for birds.

Migratory Birds

What are Migratory Birds?

  • Birds that travel long distances from one region to another during certain seasons.

Birds Mentioned

  • Pelicans
  • Cranes
  • Ducks
  • Rosy Pastors

Journey to India

  • Many birds come from Europe, Siberia, and other cold countries.
  • They travel thousands of kilometres to reach India.

Rosy Pastor

  • Similar to a myna bird.
  • Called “Vaiya” in Gujarati.
  • Dull brown and pink in colour.
  • Arrives in India during June–July.
  • Returns to Europe during March–April.

How Migratory Birds Travel

Navigation

  • Birds use the Sun to find their direction.

Flying Time

  • They often travel in the early morning.
  • During return migration, they may fly in the evening.

Migration Patterns

Different birds follow different patterns:

V-Shape Formation

  • Cranes
  • Ducks
  • Geese

Group Travel

  • Certain duck
  • Warblers
  • Flycatchers

Tips for Bird Watching (Birding)

1. Observe the Colour

  • Notice the colour of the bird.

2. Observe the Size

  • Compare its size with other birds.

3. Observe the Bill and Tail

  • Notice their shape and length.

4. Observe the Place

Check where the bird is seen:

  • Tree
  • Wire
  • Water body
  • Open ground
  • Grassland

These observations help identify birds correctly.
