The story The Unlikely Best Friends revolves around Gajaraj, a royal elephant who lives in the best part of the royal stables. Despite having all the luxuries, Gajaraj feels lonely because he has no friends. His only company is the mahout (elephant trainer), who is kind to him but not a real friend.
One evening, a stray dog wanders into Gajaraj’s stable, looking tired and hungry. Gajaraj, feeling compassionate, pushes some of his food towards the dog. The dog gratefully eats the food and falls asleep. The next morning, the mahout finds the dog in the stable but doesn’t mind because he notices that Gajaraj seems happy with the dog’s presence. The dog starts accompanying Gajaraj everywhere, including during his baths and walks.
As time passes, Gajaraj and the dog, named Buntee by a passing farmer, become close friends. They enjoy playing together, and the dog even gets rides on Gajaraj’s back. One day, the farmer who owns Buntee finds him and takes him back home. Both Buntee and Gajaraj are heartbroken at being separated.
Back at home, Buntee refuses to eat, and the same happens with Gajaraj in the stable. Both miss each other dearly. The farmer, realizing that Buntee is missing his friend, releases him to return to the stable. Buntee runs back to Gajaraj, and the two are joyfully reunited. Seeing the bond between the two animals, the farmer and the mahout become friends as well.
