The City from the Sky
In the first stanza of this poem the poet describes his city. He tells us how it appears from the window of an aeroplane. It is clear that the city developed just as it was necessary for the people. So what looked haphazard on ground looked inevitable from the sky.
Logic of Geography
Now the plane rises to a height of ten thousand feet. The poet can see the logic of geography. He can see why the cities in the country have grown along the rivers. The valleys are populated for the same reason. It is land and water together that attracts the people.
More Sea than Land
When the plane rises still higher—six miles up, the earth looks round. From that height it is clear that the earth has more sea than land. However, one question remains unanswered. It is difficult to understand why people hate and kill one another.
The Mystery
Thus it is easy to understand the logic of geography from a height. However, it is very difficult to understand why humans hate one another. This remains a mystery.

आकाश से शहर का दृश्य
इस कविता के पहले पद में कवि अपने नगर का वर्णन करता है। वह हमें बताता है जैसा उसे किसी हवाई जहाज़ की खिड़की से दिखाई देता है। यह स्पष्ट हो जाता है कि नगर का विकासे उस तरह से हुआ जिस तरह से लोगों की आवश्यकता थी। अत: ज़मीन पर जो बात अव्यवस्थित लगती थी, आकाश से वह अवश्यम्भावी लगती थी।
भूगोल का तर्क
अब जहाज़ दस हजार फीट की ऊँचाई पर पहुँचता है। कवि भूगोल के तर्क को समझ सकता है। वह देख सकता है कि क्यों देश के नगर नदियों के किनारे विकसित हुए हैं। घाटियाँ भी इसी कारण बेसी हैं। भूमि और जल का एक साथ होना लोगों को आकर्षित करता है।
भूमि से अधिक समुद्र
जब जहाज और ऊँचा, 6 मील की ऊँचाई पर उठता है तब धरती गोल दिखाई देती है। उस ऊँचाई से यह बात भी स्पष्ट हो जाती है कि पृथ्वी पर थल की अपेक्षा जल (समुद्र) अधिक है। पर एक प्रश्न अनुत्तरित रह जाता है। यह समझना कठिन है कि क्यों लोग एक-दूसरे से घृणा करते हैं और उन्हें मारते हैं।
रहस्य
इस प्रकार एक ऊँचाई पर पहुँचकर भूगोल के तर्क को समझना आसान हो जाता है। पर यह समझना बहुत कठिन है कि मनुष्य एक-दूसरे से घृणा क्यों करते हैं। यह रहस्य बना रहता है।
