Bepin Choudhury’s Lapse of Memory Summary In English
I
Introduction
It is a humorous story in which the main character is made to believe himself sick. Perforce, he thinks that he has a lapse of memory. In truth there is nothing wrong with him.
Bepin Meets Ghosh
Bepin Choudhury was a regular visitor at Kalicharan’s book shop in the New Market. That day, however, he had a strange feeling that someone was observing him closely. He turned round only to see a meek looking person break into a smile. The man seemed much surprised that Bepin Babu had not recognised him. He told Bepin Babu that he had been with him for a week when he visited Ranchi in 1958. Obviously, Bepin Babu thought that the man who called himself Parimal Ghosh was mistaken. He had never been to Ranchi. He told him so. But Ghosh looked at him in disbelief.
Ghosh Confuses Choudhury
Ghosh laughed aloud. He narrated the incidents of his Ranchi journey in detail. He told Choudhury how he had injured his knee in Hudroo. It was Ghosh who had come to his help then. One Mr. Dinesh Mukerji was also in Ranchi at that time. Ghosh was sure that Choudhury knew him. Choudhury had stayed in a hired bungalow while Mukerji remained with his sister. He even reminded Choudhury that he always carried a bag with his books on his sight-seeing trips. Now Bepin Babu asked Ghosh which month it was. ‘October’, replied Ghosh. At this Bepin Babu said that in October 1958, he was with his friend at Kanpur,
Ghosh is Determined
Ghosh didn’t give in. He told Bepin Babu how he had one day spoken about his lonely life. Bepin Babu had then spoken about his dead wife and the only brother who died insane. Bepin Babu felt that while he stepped out, Ghosh was still looking at him in disbelief.

Bepin Babu Doubts
Bepin Babu asked his driver Sitaram to drive by the Ganga. He regretted having paid any heed to Ghosh. Yet the incident haunted his mind. The man knew a great deal about him. For the first time a slight doubt assailed his mind. “Was he losing his mind ?” But he remembered well that he was at Kanpur. Suddenly he thought of writing to Haridas Bagchi, his host at Kanpur. Then he remembered that Haridas had left for Japan a few weeks before.
Bepin Babu Decides to Confirm
Bepin Babu rolled up his trousers and took a look at his right knee. There was a cut-mark. It was difficult to remember when he had got it. Then he thought of Dinesh Mukerji. Ghosh had said that Dinesh was in Ranchi at that time. He wanted to go to him at once. But what would Dinesh think of him ? After all Bepin Babu knew that he had never been to Ranchi. Dinesh would certainly consider him a little insane. He knew also that Dinesh was never his well-wisher.
Bepin Babu comes Home
Bepin Babu felt much better when he was home. After dinner, he lost himself in a new office the incident came back to him. Just before lunch Bepin Babu decided to ring up Dinesh. To his surprise, Dinesh confirmed what Ghosh had said.
Bepin Babu is Sick
Bepin Babu slammed the receiver down. He had lost his appetite. He did not take his lunch. Mr Mukerji had only added to his worries.

Chunilal Confirms His Fears
Bepin Babu had been in that firm for twenty five years. For the first time he was feeling sick. He could not continue working. His head was in a whirl. He came home. It was only 2.30. At 7.30 there was a visitor named Chuni Babu. Bepin Babu knew why Chunilal had come. They were at school together. Now Chunilal was having a rough time. He wanted Bepin Babu’s help about a job. Bepin Babu knew he could not do anything and told him so. Yet Chunilal kept pressing. So at first he sent word that he could not meet Chunilal for a few weeks. Then remembering something, he hurried down to see him. He asked Chunilal if he remembered his going to Ranchi in 1958. Of course Chunilal did. He looked at Bepin Babu’s face with concern. How could a man with so sharp a memory forget it ? Chunilal had himself been at the railway station to see him off. He expressed great concern about Bepin Babu’s health. Bepin Babu said that it must be the hard work. He told Chunilal that he would consult a specialist.
The Specialist
Bepin Babu went to Dr Paresh Chandra and put his problem before him. The doctor was puzzled. He told him that his was an unusual case. He remembered everything except his trip to Ranchi. Yet he was somehow convinced of having been there. So the doctor suggested that he should go to Ranchi now. The sight of the place might remind him of the trip.
Bepin Babu at Ranchi
Acting upon his doctor’s advice, Bepin Babu went to Ranchi. At the railway station of Ranchi itself, he felt certain of one thing. It was that he had never been there before. He went round the city and had the same feeling. He decided to try a trip to Hudroo also. So he went there. At five O’clock, the same afternoon two Gujarati gentlemen found him. He was lying unconscious beside a boulder in Hudroo. On regaining consciousness, his first words were, “I’m finished. There’s no hope left.”
Bepin Babu is Cured
Next morning, he was back in Calcutta. He was a shattered man. He wondered if he was going to end up in an asylum. He rang up Dr. Chandra and asked him to come over. That day he went to bed with an ice bag clamped on his head. Then he received an envelope. He went through the letter at once. It was from Chunilal. In his letter Chunilal had first expressed his bitterness for getting no help from Bepin Babu. Then he frankly told Bepin Babu that his memory was alright. It was his plan in retribution against his unfeeling behaviour. Then he told Bepin Choudhury how he had played a practical joke upon him. This he did with the help of Mr Ghosh and Dinesh Mukerji. Now it was clear to Bepin Babu that he had not really lost his memory.
Bepiit Babu’s Lie
When Dr. Chandra came, Bepin Babu told a lie. He said that he had remembered everything on reaching Ranchi Railway station. He said that he had called him for a pain-killer. He had the pain in the hip due to a fall in Ranchi.

न्यू मार्केट में स्थित कालीचरन की पुस्तकों की दुकान पर विपिन चौधरी नियम से जाते थे। पर उस दिन उन्हें विचित्र सी अनुभूति हुई कि किसी व्यक्ति की आँखें उन पर टिकी थीं। जैसे ही उन्होंने मुड़कर देखा, एक सीधा-सा आदमी मुस्करा उठा। वह आदमी बड़ा चकित था कि बिपिन बाबू ने उसे पहचाना नहीं था। उसने बिपिन बाबू को बताया कि 1958 में उनकी राँची यात्रा में एक सप्ताह तक वह उनके साथ था। स्पष्टतः स्वाभाविक रूप से विपिन बाबू ने सोचा कि वह व्यक्ति जो स्वयं का नाम परिमल पोष बताता था, गलती कर रहा था। वे तो कभी राँची गए ही नहीं। उन्होंने यह बात उससे कही। पर घोष ने उनकी ओर अविश्वास से देखा।
घोष चौधरी को भ्रमित करता है।
घोष जोर से हँसा। उसने उनकी राँची यात्रा में घटित बातों को विस्तार से बताया। उसने चौधरी को बताया कि कैसे हुड में उनके घुटने में चोट लगी थी। तब घोष ने ही उनकी सहायता की थी। उन दिनों मि. दिनेश मुकर्जी नाम का एक व्यक्ति भी राँचौ में था। घोष को निश्चय था कि चौधरी उसे जानते थे। चौधरी किराए के एक बंगले में रुके थे जबकि वह (मुकर्जी) अपनी बहन के यहाँ रुका था। उसने चौधरी को यह भी याद दिलाया कि सैर-सपाटे के लिए जाते हुए वे सदा पुस्तकों का एक थैला अपने साथ रखते थे। अब बिपिन बाबू ने घोष से पूछा कि यह कौन सा महीना था। ‘अक्टूबर’, घोष ने उत्तर दिया। इस पर बिपिन बाबू ने जवाब दिया कि अक्टूबर 1958 में वे कानपुर में अपने मित्र के घर पर गए थे।
घोष इटा रहा
घोष ने हार नहीं मानी। उसने बिपिन बाबू को बताया कि कैसे एक दिन उन्होंने अपने जीवन के एकाकीपन की चर्चा की थी। तब बिपिन बाबू ने अपनी स्वर्गीय पत्नी के बारे में और उस इकलौते भाई के बारे में जो पागल होकर मरा था, बताया था। बिपिन बाबू को लगा कि जब वे दुकान के बाहर निकल रहे थे, तब भी घोष अविश्वास भरी नजरों से उनकी ओर देख रहा था।
II
बिपिन बाबू को शंका होती है।
बिपिन बाबू ने अपने ड्राइवर सीताराम से गंगा के किनारे-किनारे चलने को कहा। उन्हें दु:ख हो रहा था कि उन्होंने घोष की बात पर जरा सा ध्यान भी क्यों दिया। फिर भी वह घटना उनका पीछा न छोड़ती थी। उस आदमी को उनके बारे में बहुत कुछ पता था। पहली बार उनके मस्तिष्क में कुछ संदेह हुआ। “क्या उनका दिमाग खराब हो रहा है ?” पर उन्हें तो अच्छी तरह याद था कि वे तो कानपुर में थे। अचानक उन्हें ख्याल आया कि वे कानपुर के अपने मेजबान हरीदास बागची को पत्र लिखें। तब ही उन्हें याद आया कि हरीदास तो कुछ सप्ताह पहले जापान जा चुका है।
बिपिन बाबू संदेह समाप्त करने का निश्चय करते हैं।
बिपिन बाबू ने अपनी पैन्ट ऊपर चढ़ाई और अपने दाएँ घुटने पर नजर डाली। इस पर कटने का चिह्न था। यह याद करना कठिन था कि यह कब लगा था। तब उन्हें दिनेश मुकर्जी का ख्याल आया। घोष ने बताया था कि दिनेश उस समय राँची में था। वे तुरंत ही उसके पास जाना चाहते थे। पर दिनेश उनके बारे में क्या सोचेगा ? आखिर बिपिन बाबू तो जानते ही थे कि वे राँची कभी नहीं गए। निश्चय ही दिनेश उन्हें कुछ सिरफिरा समझेगा। वे यह भी जानते थे कि दिनेश कभी उनका शुभचिंतक नहीं रहा था।
बिपिन बाबू घर आते हैं।
घर आकर बिथिन बाबू को काफी राहत मिली। भोजन के बाद वे एक नए उपन्यास में खो गए और घोष के बारे में सब कुछ भूल गए। अगले दिन ऑफिस पहुँचने पर सारी घटना फिर उन्हें याद आ गई। लंच के ठीक पहले बिपिन बाबू ने दिनेश को फोन करने का निश्चय किया। वे हैरान रह गए जब दिनेश ने घोष की बात को सत्यापित किया।
विपिन बाबू बीमार पड़े।
बिपिन बाबू ने टेलीफोन के रिसीवर को पटक दिया। उनकी भूख जाती रही। उन्होंने लंच नहीं लिया। मि, मुकर्जी ने उनकी चिंताओं को केवल और बढ़ा दिया था।

चुन्नीलाल उनके संदेह को पक्का करता है।
बिपिन बाबू पिछले पच्चीस वर्ष से इस फर्म में कार्यरत थे। पहली बार वे अपने आप को अस्वस्थ अनुभव कर रहे थे। वे काम नहीं कर पा रहे थे। उनका सिर चकरा रहा था। वे घर आ गए। अभी केवल दो बजकर तीस मिनट ही हुए थे। सात बजकर तीस मिनट पर उनके पास एक मुलाकाती आया जिसका नाम चुन्नी बाबू था। बिपिन बाबू जानते थे कि चुन्नीलाल क्यों आया था। वे स्कूल में साथ-साथ पढ़ते थे। अब चुन्नीलाल बुरे वक्त से गुजर रहा था। किसी काम के सिलसिले में वह बिपिन बाबू की सहायता चाहता था। बिपिन बाबू जानते थे कि वे कुछ नहीं कर सकते थे और ऐसा उसे बता चुके थे। फिर भी चुन्नीलाल पीछे पड़ा रहा। अत: सबसे पहले उन्होंने यह संदेश भेजा कि कुछ सप्ताह तक वे चुन्नीलाल से नहीं मिल सकते थे। फिर कुछ याद करके, शीघ्रता से सीढ़ियाँ उतरते हुए वे उससे मिलने आए। उन्होंने चुन्नीलाल से पूछा कि क्या उसे 1958 में उनके राँची जाने की बात याद है। निस्संदेह, चुन्नीलाल को याद थी। उसने चिंता से बिपिन बाबू के चेहरे की ओर देखा। इतनी अच्छी स्मरणशक्ति वाला कोई व्यक्ति इस बात को कैसे भूल सकता था। चुन्नीलाल तो खुद उन्हें छोड्ने रेलवे स्टेशन तक गया था। उसने बिपिन बाबू के स्वास्थ्य के बारे में बड़ी चिंता जताई। बिपिन् बाबू ने कहा कि अवश्य अधिक श्रम के कारण ऐसा हुआ होगा। उन्होंने चुन्नीलाल से कहा कि वे किसी विशेषज्ञ डाक्टर से सलाह लेंगे।
विशेषज्ञ
बिपिन बाबू डा. परेश चंद्र के पास गए और उसके सामने अपनी समस्या रखी। डाक्टर की समझ में न आया। उसने उन्हें बताया कि उनका मामला असाधारण था। उन्हें राँची की अपनी यात्रा के अतिरिक्त सब कुछ याद था। फिर भी किसी कारणवश उन्हें विश्वास था कि वे वहाँ गए हैं। अतः डाक्टर ने सुझाव दिया कि अब वे राँची जाएँ। शायद उस स्थान को देखकर उन्हें अपनी यात्रा की याद आ जाए।
बिपिन बाबू राँची में
अपने डाक्टर की सलाह मानकर बिपिन बाबू राँची पहुँचे। राँची के रेलवे स्टेशन पर पहुँचकर ही उन्हें एक बात का विश्वास हो गया। वह थी कि वे वहाँ कभी नहीं गए थे। उन्होंने शहर का चक्कर लगाया और यही भावना रही। उन्होंने निश्चय किया कि हुडरू की यात्रा भी करके देख लिया जाए। अत: वे वहाँ गए। उसी दिन दोपहर बाद 5 बजे दो गुजराती भद्र पुरुषों ने उन्हें देखा। वे पानी के पास एक गोल चट्टान के निकट हुडरू में मूर्छित पड़े थे। होश में आने पर उनके पहले शब्द थे : “मैं खत्म हो गया हैं। अब कोई आशा नहीं है।”
बिपिन बाबू रोग मुक्त हुए
अगले दिन प्रातः वे कलकत्ता वापस आ गए थे। वे टूट चुके थे। वह सोच रहे थे कि क्या उनका अंत किसी पागलखाने में होगा। उन्होंने डा. चन्द्रा को फोन किया और आने के लिए कहा। उस दिन बर्फ की एक थैली को सिर पर बाँधे वे सोने के लिए गए। तब उन्हें एक लिफाफा मिला। उन्होंने तुरंत ही पत्र पड़ा। यह चुन्नीलाल का था। इस पत्र में पहले तो बिपिन बाबू से कोई सहायता न मिलने पर चुन्नीलाल ने अपनी नाराजगी जतायी थी। फिर उसने विपिन वायू को साफ-साफ लिखा कि उनकी स्मरणशक्ति ठीक थी। उनके रूखे व्यवहार का बदला लेने की यह उसकी योजना थी। फिर उसने बिपिन चौधरी को बताया कि उसने किस प्रकार उससे मजाक किया। उसने वैसा मि, घोष और दिनेश मुकर्जी से मिलकर किया था। अब बिपिन बाबू को यह स्पष्ट हो गया कि वास्तव में उनकी स्मरण शक्ति लुप्त नहीं हुई थी।
विपिन बाबू का झूठ
जब डा, चन्द्रा आया तो बिपिन बाबू ने झूठ बोला। उन्होंने कहा कि राँची के रेलवे स्टेशन पर पहुँचते ही उन्हें सब कुछ याद आ गया था। उन्होंने कहा कि उसे उन्होंने एक दर्द-विनाशक के लिए बुलाया था। राँची में गिरने के कारण उनके कुल्हे में दर्द हो रहा था।
