Golu Grows A Nose Summary In English
Long ago, the elephants had no trunk. There was a baby elephant called Golu. He, too, had no trunk. He had only a bulgy nose as small as a small boot. Golu was full of questions. He asked the ostrich. “Why don’t you ever fly like other birds ?” He asked his very big uncle the hippopotamus. “Why are your eyes always so red ?” Golu’s uncles did not answer his questions. They thought the questions were too difficult.
One day Golu met a mynah. He asked it. “What does a crocodile have for dinner?” The mynah advised Golu to go to the Limpopo river.
Golu went home. After the meals, Golu said to his family, “Goodbye. I am going to the great grassy Limpopo river. I’ll find out what the crocodile has for dinner.” Thus Golu started for Limpopo river to find out what the crocodile has for dinner.
On his way Golu met a python. He asked him also the same question. The python also did not give any reply. However, he quietly followed Golu. When he reached the river, he saw a big log of wood. Actually it was a crocodile. When it winked at Golu he asked. “Have you ever seen a crocodile ?” The crocodile told him that it was him. Crocodile shed crocodile tears to show that it was true.
Golu was frightened. Yet he asked the crocodile what he had for dinner. The crocodile said. “Come here, little one, and I’ll whisper the answer to you.” He said it because he wanted to eat Golu. Golu went near him. The crocodile caught him by the nose. Then he told Golu that today he would be his dinner.
Now the python came to Golu’s help. He asked Golu to pull hard. Now both the crocodile and Golu tried to pull each other. Then the python coiled himself round Golu’s stomach. He also applied his strength with Golu. In the mean time Golu’s nose kept on stretching. In the end Golu was able to free himself but his nose had become five feet long. Golu sat there for two days waiting for the nose to cool and shrink. The nose cooled but did not shrink.
Python said that the long nose called trunk would be useful. With it the elephant could keep the flies away. With it the elephant could put a large quantity of his food into his mouth. The trunk helps the elephant to throw mud or water on his body when it is hot.
Golu thanked the python and went back home.

बहुत समय पहले, हाथियों के सँड़ नहीं होती थी। एक शिशु हाथी था जिसका नाम गोलू था। उसके भी कोई सैंड न थी। उसके केवल एक बाहर निकलती हुई बड़ी नाक थी जो एक छोटे से जूते जैसी छोटी थी। गोलू सवाल बहुत करता था। उसने शुतुरमुर्ग से पूछा, “तुम दूसरे जानवरों की तरह कभी उड़ते क्यों नहीं हो ?” उसने अपने अत्यन्त विशाल अंकल दरियाई घोड़े से पूछा, “तुम्हारी आँखें सदा इतनी लाल क्यों रहती हैं ?’ गोलू के अंकलों ने उसके प्रश्नों के उत्तर नहीं दिये। उनके विचार में सवाल बहुत कठिन थे।
एक दिन गोलू किसी मैना से मिला। उसने उससे पूछा, “मगरमच्छ भोजन में क्या खाता है ?’ मैना ने गोलू को सलाह दी कि वह लिपोपो नदी पर जाए।
गोलू घर गया। भोजन के बाद गोलू अपने परिवार से बोला, “विदा। मैं विशाल और घास वाली लिपोपो नदी पर जा रहा हूँ। मैं पता लगाऊँगा कि मगरमच्छ क्या भोजन करता है। इस प्रकार यह पता लगाने के लिए कि मगरमच्छ क्या भोजन करता है गोलू लिपोपो नदी की ओर चल पड़ा।
रास्ते में गोलू एक अजगर से मिला। उसने उससे भी वही सवाल पूछा। अजगर ने भी कोई उत्तर नहीं दिया। पर वह चुपचाप गोलू के पीछे चल पड़ा। जब वह नदी के पास पहुँचा, उसे लकड़ी का एक बड़ा लट्ठा दिखाई दिया। वास्तव में यह एक मगरमच्छ था। जब इसने गोलू की तरफ देख कर पलक झपकायी तब उसने पूछा, “क्या तुमने कभी कोई मगरमच्छ देखा है ?” मगरमच्छ ने उसे बताया कि यह वही है। मगरमच्छ ने यह बताने के लिए कि यह बात सच है मगरमच्छ के आँसू बहाए।
गोलू डर गया। फिर भी उसने मगरमच्छ से पूछा कि वह भोजन में क्या खाता है। मगरमच्छ बोला, “छोटू, मेरे पास आ. और मैं तुझे धीरे से जवाब दूंगा।” उसने ऐसा इसलिए कहा क्योंकि वह गोलू को खाना चाहता था। गोलू उसके पास गया। मगरमच्छ ने उसकी नाक पकड़ ली। तब उसने गोलू को बताया कि आज वही उसका भोजन होगा।
अब अजगर गोलू की मदद के लिए आया। उसने गोलू से कहा कि जोर लगाकर खींचे। अब गोलू और मगरमच्छ दोनों एक-दूसरे को खींचने लगे। तब अजगर गोलू के पेट पर रस्सी की तरह बंध गया। गोलु के साथ-साथ उसने भी अपना जोर लगाया। इस बीच गोलू की नाक फैलती चली गयी। अंततः गोलू अपने आपको आजाद करने में सफल रहा पर उसकी नाक पाँच फुट लंबी हो गयी। गोलू दो दिन तक वहाँ इस प्रतीक्षा में बैठा रहा कि उसकी नाक छोटी और ठंडी हो जाये। नाक ठंडी तो हुई पर छोटी नहीं।
अजगर ने कहा कि लंबी नाक जिसे सैंड कहते हैं उपयोगी रहेगी। इससे हाथी मक्खियों को भगा सकता था। इससे हाथी अपने भोजन की बड़ी मात्रा को अपने मुँह में डाल सकता था। गर्मी में सैंड, अपने ऊपर कीचड़ या पानी डालने में हाथी की सहायता करता है।
गोल ने अजगर को धन्यवाद दिया और घर वापस चला गया।
