Summary

One cold Sunday afternoon, while doing homework, the narrator noticed smoke coming through the ceiling.The house caught fire, and the family rushed outside.His mother ran back inside twice – once to save important documents and again to save photographs and letters of her late husband.Firemen rescued her, and the narrator was relieved she was safe.However, the entire house was destroyed, and his beloved cat was missing.The family spent the night at his grandparents’ house.
After the Fire
The next day, the narrator went to school wearing borrowed clothes and shoes.He felt embarrassed, lonely, and insecure because he had lost everything – his home, his belongings, and even his cat.He thought he would never fit in and walked around like a “zombie.”
Support from Schoolmates
Everyone at school soon heard about his situation.The next day, his classmates surprised him by collecting clothes, school supplies, and essentials for him.Their kindness and care touched his heart.He made new friends and started feeling better and more confident.
Finding the Cat
A few weeks later, while watching the house being rebuilt with his new friends, a woman arrived holding his missing cat.The cat had run away during the fire and was found over a mile away.The woman had cared for it and returned it after finding their address.The narrator hugged his cat with tears of joy.
End of the Story
The narrator realized that, just like his house, his life was also being rebuilt.He was no longer lonely because he now had new friends and his beloved cat back.He felt grateful for love, kindness, and the people around him.He ends the story with the line:“My cat was back and so was I.”This shows that he had regained happiness, hope, and confidence in life.
