“The Fun They Had” by Isaac Asimov is a science fiction story set in the future, around the year 2157. It tells the story of two children, Margie and Tommy, who live in a time when schools and books are completely different from what we know today. In their world, learning takes place at home with the help of mechanical or robotic teachers, and books are replaced by screens called “telebooks.”
One day, Tommy finds an old printed book in his attic. Both children are amazed because they have never seen a real paper book before. They find it strange that the words on the pages do not move like on their computer screens. When they read it, they discover that the book is about “schools” from hundreds of years ago.
Margie, who dislikes her robotic teacher because it gives her too many tests, becomes curious about the old type of schools. She learns that in those days, all children went to a building called school, learned the same things together, played and laughed with classmates, and had human teachers instead of machines.
