One hot summer night, the doctor returned to his small rented room after dinner. The house was not electrified, and rats moved about freely. He had just started his medical practice and earned very little. He had about sixty rupees, some clothes, and a black coat. The doctor was unmarried at that time.
He sat in front of a mirror, admiring his looks and thinking how handsome he was. He decided to shave daily and keep a smiling face to look more attractive. Then, he thought he would marry a woman doctor who was rich and fat, so that if he made a mistake, she would not be able to catch him!
As he was lost in these proud thoughts, he suddenly heard a dull sound. Before he could react, a big cobra fell from the roof and coiled around his arm. The snake raised its hood just a few inches from his face. The doctor was so scared that he could not move or scream. He sat still, like a stone, thinking of God and death.
Then something unexpected happened – the snake looked into the mirror and seemed to admire its own beauty. Taking advantage of this, the doctor quietly got up and ran out of the room to safety. Later, when he returned with friends, he found that a thief had stolen most of his things – only his dirty vest was left behind!
The doctor ended his story humorously by saying that he never saw the snake again – perhaps it was so taken by its own beauty that it went away forever.
This story teaches us not to be vain or proud and shows how humor can be found even in frightening situations.

कहानी “The Snake and the Mirror” एक हास्यपूर्ण और रोचक कथा है, जिसे वैकोम मुहम्मद बशीर ने लिखा है। इसमें एक होम्योपैथिक डॉक्टर अपने जीवन की एक डरावनी लेकिन मज़ेदार घटना सुनाता है।
एक गर्मी की रात डॉक्टर भोजन करके अपने छोटे किराए के कमरे में लौटता है। कमरे में बिजली नहीं थी और वहाँ चूहों का आना-जाना लगा रहता था। उसकी आमदनी बहुत कम थी – केवल साठ रुपए, कुछ कपड़े और एक काला कोट था। वह उस समय अविवाहित था।
वह दर्पण के सामने बैठकर अपने रूप की प्रशंसा करने लगा। उसने सोचा कि वह रोज़ दाढ़ी बनाएगा और हमेशा मुस्कुराता रहेगा ताकि और आकर्षक लगे। फिर उसने सोचा कि वह एक अमीर और मोटी औरत से शादी करेगा ताकि अगर कभी उसे भागना पड़े तो वह उसका पीछा न कर सके!
उसी समय अचानक छत से आवाज़ आई और एक बड़ा कोबरा साँप उसकी बाँह पर गिर गया। साँप ने अपनी फन फैलाकर सिर उठाया और उसका चेहरा उसके बहुत पास था। डॉक्टर डर से जड़ हो गया, वह हिल भी नहीं सका। उसने मन ही मन भगवान को याद किया और अपनी मृत्यु के बारे में सोचा।
तभी साँप ने दर्पण में अपनी परछाईं देखी और जैसे अपनी सुंदरता में खो गया। डॉक्टर ने इस मौके का फायदा उठाया और धीरे से उठकर बाहर भाग गया। अगले दिन जब वह दोस्तों के साथ कमरे में लौटा, तो पाया कि एक चोर उसकी सारी चीज़ें ले गया था – बस उसका गंदा बनियान छोड़ गया था!
डॉक्टर ने मज़ाक में कहा कि उसने उस साँप को फिर कभी नहीं देखा – शायद वह अपनी सुंदरता में ही खो गया था।
यह कहानी हमें सिखाती है कि घमंड नहीं करना चाहिए, और यह दिखाती है कि डरावनी घटनाओं में भी हास्य पाया जा सकता है।
