कवि बताता है कि वह एक पीले जंगल (yellow wood) में पहुँचा, जहाँ रास्ता दो दिशाओं में बँटा हुआ था। वह दोनों रास्तों पर नहीं जा सकता था, इसलिए उसे एक रास्ता चुनना पड़ा। वह काफी देर तक खड़ा रहकर सोचता रहा कि कौन-सा रास्ता सही रहेगा। अंत में उसने कम चले गए रास्ते (the road less travelled) को चुना – यानी वह रास्ता जो नया था और जिस पर बहुत कम लोग चले थे।
शुरू में दोनों रास्ते लगभग एक जैसे लग रहे थे, जिन पर ताज़े पत्ते गिरे हुए थे। कवि ने सोचा कि पहला रास्ता कभी बाद में चलेगा, लेकिन उसे यह भी पता था कि जीवन में एक रास्ता दूसरे की ओर ले जाता है, इसलिए वापस लौटना संभव नहीं होता।
