One day, Saint Peter, who was tired and hungry after preaching all day, stopped at the cottage of an old woman who was baking cakes. He asked her for just one small cake to eat. The woman made a small cake, but each time she looked at it, she felt it was too large to give away. She made smaller and smaller cakes, but could not part with even the tiniest one. Seeing her selfishness, Saint Peter became angry and punished her. He said that since she was too greedy to live as a human, she would become a bird and find her own food by boring into wood. Instantly, the woman turned into a woodpecker with a red cap and black body. Even today, people can see her pecking at trees for food. The poem teaches that greed and selfishness are punished, and one should always help the needy.

कविता “ए लीजेंड ऑफ द नॉर्थलैंड” (A Legend of the Northland) कवयित्री फीबी कैरी द्वारा रचित एक नैतिक कथा है। यह कहानी उत्तरी देशों की है, जहाँ दिन छोटे और रातें बहुत लंबी होती हैं। एक दिन सेंट पीटर, जो पूरे दिन उपदेश देने के बाद भूखे और थके हुए थे, एक बूढ़ी औरत के घर पहुँचे जो केक बना रही थी। सेंट पीटर ने उससे एक छोटा सा केक माँगा। वह औरत एक केक बनाती, पर हर बार उसे लगता कि यह देने के लिए बहुत बड़ा है। उसने बार-बार छोटे केक बनाए, लेकिन किसी को भी देने का मन नहीं किया। उसकी स्वार्थी प्रवृत्ति देखकर सेंट पीटर बहुत क्रोधित हो गए। उन्होंने उसे दंड देते हुए कहा कि अब वह इंसान के रूप में रहने योग्य नहीं है और उसे पक्षी बनकर अपना भोजन स्वयं खोजना होगा। उसी क्षण वह औरत लकड़खोदवा (woodpecker) पक्षी में बदल गई। उसके सिर पर लाल टोपी जैसी कलगी रह गई और बाकी शरीर काला हो गया। आज भी बच्चे उसे जंगलों में पेड़ों पर चोंच मारते देखते हैं। यह कविता सिखाती है कि लालच और स्वार्थ का अंत बुरा होता है, और हमें जरूरतमंदों की मदद करनी चाहिए।
