“The Adventures of Toto” is a humorous and interesting story written by Ruskin Bond. The story is about a naughty little monkey named Toto, whom the narrator’s Grandfather buys from a tonga-driver for five rupees. Grandfather keeps many pets in his private zoo, and Toto becomes the new member of it.
Toto is a beautiful but mischievous monkey. He has bright eyes full of mischief and a smile that frightens old ladies. His tail is as useful as his hands, and he uses it like a third hand. At first, Grandfather keeps Toto secretly in a closet because Grandmother does not like animals in the house. When they open the closet later, they find the wallpaper torn and the narrator’s school blazer in pieces. Grandfather, instead of being angry, feels proud of Toto’s cleverness.
When Toto disturbs other animals in the servants’ quarters, Grandfather decides to take him to Saharanpur while collecting his pension. Toto travels in a black canvas bag, which he keeps jumping and rolling about in, attracting everyone’s attention at the railway station. The ticket-collector calls Toto a dog and makes Grandfather pay three rupees as fare.
After returning home, Toto is kept in the stable with the family donkey, Nana, but he bites Nana’s ears on the first night. He takes baths like a human, testing the water and using soap, but once he almost boils himself alive by sitting in a kettle of hot water. Toto’s naughty behavior continues — he tears clothes, breaks dishes, and even throws a plate and a dish of pulao at Grandmother and aunts.
Finally, Grandfather realizes that Toto is too mischievous and expensive to keep. So, he sells Toto back to the same tonga-driver for three rupees.
The story shows how amusing yet troublesome pets can be and how too much mischief can turn fun into a problem.

“The Adventures of Toto” (टोटो के रोमांचक कारनामे) रस्किन बॉन्ड द्वारा लिखी गई एक मज़ेदार कहानी है। इसमें एक छोटे शरारती बंदर टोटो की कहानी बताई गई है जिसे लेखक के दादाजी एक टाँगा-चालक से पाँच रुपये में खरीदते हैं। दादाजी के पास पहले से कई पालतू जानवर थे, और टोटो उनके निजी चिड़ियाघर का नया सदस्य बनता है।
टोटो बहुत सुंदर लेकिन बेहद शरारती था। उसकी चमकदार आँखें शरारत से भरी थीं और उसकी मुस्कान बुज़ुर्ग औरतों को डराती थी। उसकी पूँछ उसका तीसरा हाथ जैसी थी। शुरू में दादाजी उसे अलमारी में छिपाकर रखते हैं ताकि दादीजी को पता न चले। लेकिन जब अलमारी खोली जाती है, तो दीवार की सजावटी कागज़ फटे होते हैं और लेखक का स्कूल ब्लेज़र टुकड़ों में होता है। दादाजी फिर भी खुश होते हैं कि टोटो बहुत चालाक है।
जब टोटो दूसरे जानवरों को सोने नहीं देता, तो दादाजी उसे अपने साथ सहारनपुर ले जाते हैं। वह उसे एक काले कैनवास के बैग में रखते हैं। स्टेशन पर टोटो बैग में उछलता-कूदता है और लोगों का ध्यान खींचता है। टिकट-जाँचने वाला टोटो को “कुत्ता” कहता है और दादाजी से तीन रुपये किराया वसूलता है।
घर आने के बाद टोटो को गधे नाना के साथ अस्तबल में रखा जाता है, लेकिन वह नाना के कान काट लेता है। वह इंसानों की तरह नहाता है, लेकिन एक बार गर्म पानी की केतली में बैठकर खुद को लगभग उबाल लेता है। वह कपड़े फाड़ देता है, बर्तन तोड़ता है और पुलाव की थाली लेकर पेड़ पर चढ़ जाता है।
आख़िर में दादाजी को लगता है कि टोटो बहुत शरारती और खर्चीला है। इसलिए वे उसे उसी टाँगा-चालक को वापस तीन रुपये में बेच देते हैं।
यह कहानी बताती है कि पालतू जानवर भले ही मज़ेदार हों, लेकिन अगर वे बहुत शरारती हों तो परेशानी भी बन सकते हैं।
