One of Iswaran’s most interesting stories is about a mad elephant that escaped from a timber yard. It destroyed everything on its way – fences, stalls, and even entered a school. Everyone was scared, but young Iswaran hit the elephant’s toenail with a stick using a Japanese art like karate or jujitsu, which made the elephant fall unconscious.
Mahendra always enjoyed his stories, even though they sometimes sounded unbelievable. One day, Iswaran told him that their factory area was once a burial ground and described a horrible female ghost carrying a baby in her arms. Mahendra scolded him for talking nonsense and said ghosts don’t exist.
However, one night, during a full moon, Mahendra heard a strange crying sound near his window. When he looked out, he saw a dark, cloudy figure holding a bundle. He was terrified and fell back in fear. The next morning, Iswaran asked him if he had seen the ghost the previous night. This made Mahendra so frightened that he decided to resign and leave the place the very next day.

“इस्वरन द स्टोरीटेलर” (कहानीकार इस्वरन) की कहानी महेंद्र नाम के व्यक्ति की है जो निर्माण स्थलों पर पर्यवेक्षक (supervisor) का काम करता है। उसे बार-बार अलग-अलग जगहों पर जाना पड़ता है – कभी कोयले की खदान, कभी पुल या कारखाने की साइट पर। वह बहुत सरल और शांत स्वभाव का व्यक्ति है। उसके साथ उसका रसोइया इस्वरन रहता है जो न केवल खाना बनाता है बल्कि एक बहुत ही अच्छा कहानीकार भी है।
इस्वरन बहुत बुद्धिमान और मेहनती था। वह सबसे कठिन जगहों पर भी सब्ज़ियाँ और पकाने की चीज़ें ढूँढ़ निकालता था और स्वादिष्ट खाना बनाता था। खाली समय में वह तमिल भाषा की रोमांचक किताबें पढ़ता था। इसी कारण उसकी कहानियों में हमेशा रोमांच, रहस्य और नाटकीयता होती थी।
एक दिन उसने एक पागल हाथी की कहानी सुनाई, जिसने पूरे शहर में हंगामा मचा दिया था। सब लोग डर गए थे, लेकिन इस्वरन ने साहस दिखाते हुए हाथी के तीसरे नाखून पर डंडा मारा जिससे वह बेहोश होकर गिर पड़ा। महेंद्र को उसकी बातें सुनना बहुत अच्छा लगता था, भले ही वे कभी-कभी अविश्वसनीय लगती थीं।
एक दिन इस्वरन ने बताया कि जहाँ वे रह रहे हैं, वह जगह पहले श्मशान भूमि (burial ground) थी और वहाँ एक भूतनी दिखाई देती है जो अपने बच्चे को गोद में लिए रहती है। महेंद्र ने गुस्से में कहा कि ऐसे भूत-प्रेत कुछ नहीं होते।
लेकिन एक पूर्णिमा की रात, महेंद्र ने अपनी खिड़की के पास से अजीब-सी कराहने की आवाज़ सुनी। जब उसने बाहर देखा, तो उसे एक काले धुएँ जैसा आकृति दिखी जो किसी बच्चे को गोद में लिए थी। वह बहुत डर गया और पसीने से भीग गया। अगले दिन इस्वरन ने मुस्कराकर कहा कि उसने भी वह भूतनी देखी थी। यह सुनकर महेंद्र डर गया और अगले ही दिन उस जगह को छोड़ने का निश्चय कर लिया।
