Summary In English
The story “In the Kingdom of Fools” is a Kannada folktale that teaches how foolish rulers can bring danger to their people, and only wisdom can save lives.
In a strange kingdom, both the king and his minister were foolish. They decided to make everything opposite to normal – day became night and night became day. People were ordered to work at night and sleep during the day. Anyone who disobeyed would be punished with death.
One day, a guru and his disciple visited this kingdom. They were surprised to see that the whole town slept during the day. At night, the shops opened, and everything – rice, wheat, fruits, and even gold – cost the same, one duddu. The disciple was happy because food was cheap, but the guru warned him that foolishness never lasts long and could be dangerous. The guru left, but the disciple stayed to enjoy the cheap food.
Later, a thief broke into a rich man’s house, but the weak wall fell and killed him. His brother complained to the king that the merchant was guilty for building a weak wall. The king foolishly called the merchant guilty and wanted to punish him. But the merchant blamed the bricklayer, who blamed a dancing girl for distracting him, who in turn blamed a goldsmith for making her walk up and down his street, and finally, the goldsmith blamed the merchant’s father who had ordered the jewellery.
In the end, the king declared that since the merchant’s father was dead, the merchant himself must be punished for his father’s sins. But the merchant was too thin to fit the stake. So the king ordered to find someone fat enough for execution – and they found the disciple, who had become very fat by eating cheap food.
The disciple realized his guru’s warning was true and prayed to him for help. The guru, who had magical powers, saw everything and came to rescue him. He whispered something in the disciple’s ear and went to meet the king. He told the king that whoever died first on the stake would become the king in his next life, and the second person would become the minister.
Hearing this, the foolish king and his minister decided to die themselves to become king and minister again in their next life. That night, they disguised themselves as the guru and disciple and were executed instead.
The next morning, the people were shocked to see their king and minister dead. They begged the guru and disciple to rule their kingdom. The guru agreed only on one condition – that day would be day, night would be night, and people would live like normal again. Thus, the wise guru’s intelligence saved his disciple and brought order back to the kingdom.

कहानी “मूर्खों के राज्य में” एक कन्नड़ लोककथा है जो सिखाती है कि मूर्खता हमेशा विनाश लाती है और समझदारी ही जीवन को बचा सकती है।
एक राज्य में राजा और उसका मंत्री दोनों मूर्ख थे। उन्होंने अजीब आदेश दिया कि अब दिन रात होगा और रात दिन। लोगों को रात में काम करना था और दिन में सोना था। जो कोई भी आदेश नहीं मानेगा, उसे मौत की सज़ा दी जाएगी।
एक दिन एक गुरु और उसका शिष्य उस राज्य में पहुँचे। उन्होंने देखा कि दिन में पूरा शहर सो रहा था और रात में लोग जागते थे। दुकानों में सब चीजें – चावल, फल, गेहूँ, यहाँ तक कि सोना भी – एक ही कीमत पर मिलती थीं, एक दुड्डू (सिक्का)। शिष्य बहुत खुश हुआ, लेकिन गुरु ने चेताया कि ऐसे मूर्खों के राज्य में रहना खतरनाक है। गुरु चला गया, पर शिष्य वहीं सस्ता भोजन खाकर रहने लगा।
कुछ समय बाद एक चोर एक व्यापारी के घर में घुसा। दीवार गिरने से उसकी मौत हो गई। उसका भाई राजा के पास गया और व्यापारी को दोषी बताया। राजा ने व्यापारी को बुलाया, फिर व्यापारी ने राजमिस्त्री को दोषी बताया। राजमिस्त्री ने नाचने वाली लड़की को दोषी कहा, और लड़की ने सुनार (goldsmith) को। सुनार ने कहा कि उसने यह सब इसलिए किया क्योंकि व्यापारी के पिता ने उसे शादी के लिए जल्दी गहने बनाने को कहा था।
राजा ने मूर्खतापूर्ण फैसला किया कि अब व्यापारी को ही मारा जाएगा क्योंकि उसने अपने पिता की संपत्ति और पाप दोनों पाए हैं। लेकिन व्यापारी बहुत दुबला था, इसलिए राजा ने एक मोटे व्यक्ति को खोजने का आदेश दिया। उन्हें शिष्य मिला जो ज्यादा खाकर मोटा हो गया था।
शिष्य को मौत की सज़ा दी जाने लगी तो उसने अपने गुरु को याद किया। गुरु अपनी अलौकिक शक्ति से वहाँ पहुँचे और राजा को धोखे से समझाया कि जो भी पहले stake (भाले पर) मरेगा, अगले जन्म में वही राजा बनेगा। यह सुनकर राजा और मंत्री खुद मारे गए।
सुबह जब लोगों ने उन्हें मरा देखा, तो उन्होंने गुरु और शिष्य से राजा और मंत्री बनने की विनती की। गुरु ने शर्त रखी कि अब से दिन दिन रहेगा, रात रात, और सब चीजें अपने असली दाम पर मिलेंगी। इस तरह गुरु की बुद्धिमानी से राज्य फिर सामान्य और खुशहाल बन गया।
