The story “The Happy Prince” by Oscar Wilde is about a beautiful statue and a kind swallow who together help poor and suffering people in a city.
The statue of the Happy Prince stood high above the city. It was covered with fine gold, had two bright sapphires for eyes, and a large ruby on his sword. When he was alive, the prince had never known sorrow because he lived in a palace of pleasure and was always called “Happy Prince.” But after his death, his statue was placed high above the city, and from there, he could see all the suffering and poverty around him. His heart, made of lead, was full of pity, and he began to weep.
One night, a little swallow came to rest between the prince’s feet. It was on its way to Egypt but stopped for a night. When it saw the prince crying, it asked why he was sad. The prince explained that he could see a poor seamstress working hard for her sick child. He requested the swallow to take the ruby from his sword to the woman. The swallow obeyed and delivered it.
The next night, the prince asked the swallow to help a poor playwright who had no money or fire to finish his play. The swallow took out one of the prince’s sapphire eyes and gave it to the man. Later, the prince sent the other sapphire to help a poor matchgirl who had dropped her matches and was crying. Now the prince became blind, but the swallow promised to stay with him forever.
The swallow flew over the city and told the prince about the poor and hungry people. The prince asked the swallow to remove all the gold leaves from his body and give them to the poor. Soon the statue lost all its beauty and shine, but the poor became happy.
Winter came, and the swallow grew weak with cold but refused to leave the prince. At last, knowing he was dying, the swallow kissed the prince and fell dead at his feet. The prince’s lead heart broke with sorrow.
Next morning, the Mayor and Town Councillors saw that the statue looked ugly, with no gold or jewels, and ordered it to be pulled down and melted. But the leaden heart did not melt, so it was thrown away along with the dead swallow.
Finally, God sent an Angel to bring the two most precious things in the city. The Angel brought the bird and the lead heart. God said that the swallow would sing forever in heaven, and the Happy Prince would live forever in His city of gold.
This story teaches the values of kindness, sacrifice, and love. True beauty lies in helping others, not in outer appearance.

कहानी “द हैप्पी प्रिंस” (The Happy Prince) लेखक ऑस्कर वाइल्ड द्वारा लिखी गई है। यह एक सुंदर मूर्ति और एक दयालु चिड़िया (स्वैलो) की संवेदनशील कहानी है, जो दूसरों की मदद करके सच्ची खुशी का अर्थ बताती है।
शहर के बीच एक ऊँचे स्तंभ पर हैप्पी प्रिंस की मूर्ति लगी थी। वह सोने की पतली परत से ढकी थी, उसकी आँखों में नीले नीलम (sapphires) लगे थे और तलवार पर एक लाल माणिक (ruby) जड़ा था। जब वह जीवित था, तब उसने कभी दुख नहीं देखा था, इसलिए सब उसे “हैप्पी प्रिंस” कहते थे। लेकिन मरने के बाद जब उसकी मूर्ति शहर के ऊपर लगाई गई, तो उसने नीचे लोगों की गरीबी और दुख देखा और रोने लगा।
एक रात एक स्वैलो पक्षी शहर में आया। वह मिस्र जा रहा था, पर एक रात के लिए रुक गया। जब उसने देखा कि मूर्ति रो रही है, तो उसने कारण पूछा। प्रिंस ने बताया कि नीचे एक गरीब दर्जिन (seamstress) है जिसका बेटा बीमार है। उसने स्वैलो से कहा कि उसकी तलवार से माणिक (ruby) निकालकर उस औरत को दे दे। पक्षी ने ऐसा ही किया।
अगली रात प्रिंस ने स्वैलो से कहा कि एक गरीब लेखक है जो ठंड और भूख से परेशान है। उसने स्वैलो से अपनी एक नीलम आँख निकालकर उस लेखक को देने को कहा। तीसरी बार उसने अपनी दूसरी आँख भी एक गरीब माचिस बेचने वाली लड़की को देने को कहा। अब प्रिंस अंधा हो गया, लेकिन स्वैलो ने कहा कि वह उसे छोड़कर नहीं जाएगा।
स्वैलो रोज़ शहर के ऊपर उड़ता और प्रिंस को बताता कि कहाँ-कहाँ लोग भूखे और दुखी हैं। प्रिंस ने कहा कि उसके शरीर की सोने की परतें उतारकर गरीबों में बाँट दे। जब सारी सोने की परतें बाँट दी गईं, तो प्रिंस की मूर्ति बेरंग और धुंधली हो गई, लेकिन गरीबों के चेहरे खिल उठे।
जाड़ा आ गया, स्वैलो ठंड से मरने लगा, लेकिन वह प्रिंस को छोड़कर नहीं गया। मरने से पहले उसने प्रिंस को चूमा और नीचे गिरकर मर गया। उसी समय प्रिंस का सीसा दिल टूट गया।
सुबह जब लोग आए, तो उन्होंने कहा कि मूर्ति अब बेकार है, और उसे पिघला दिया गया। लेकिन उसका लेड का दिल नहीं पिघला, इसलिए उसे फेंक दिया गया।
अंत में भगवान ने एक देवदूत से कहा कि शहर की दो सबसे कीमती चीज़ें लाओ। देवदूत ने स्वैलो और टूटा हुआ दिल लाकर भगवान को दिया। भगवान ने कहा – “तुमने सही चुना है। यह छोटा पक्षी स्वर्ग में हमेशा गाएगा और हैप्पी प्रिंस मेरे स्वर्ण नगर में हमेशा रहेगा।”
यह कहानी सिखाती है कि सच्ची सुंदरता दया, करुणा और त्याग में होती है, बाहरी रूप में नहीं।
