The Last Leaf

This story is about two young artists, Sue and Johnsy, who lived together in a small flat on the third floor of an old house. One day, Johnsy became very ill with pneumonia. She was very weak and lost the will to live. She would lie in bed all day, looking out of the window at an ivy creeper whose leaves were falling because of the strong wind and rain.
Johnsy believed that when the last leaf fell from the creeper, she would also die. Sue, her friend, was very worried and tried her best to cheer her up, but nothing worked. The doctor also told Sue that Johnsy could be cured only if she had the desire to live, not just by medicine.
Sue went to their old neighbour, Mr Behrman, a sixty-year-old painter who lived downstairs. He had always dreamed of painting a masterpiece but had never done it. When Sue told him about Johnsy’s strange belief, he was shocked and decided to help.
That night, during a heavy storm, the last real leaf fell, but the next morning, when Johnsy looked out, she saw one leaf still clinging to the creeper. It gave her hope, and slowly she began to recover. She realised that she had been wrong and selfish to give up on life. The leaf made her understand that it was a sin to want to die when others were trying to help her.
Later, the doctor told Sue that Johnsy would recover but that Behrman had caught pneumonia and was very sick. The next morning, Behrman died of pneumonia. The janitor found his ladder, lantern, and brushes near his bed. He had gone out that stormy night to paint a perfect leaf on the wall to give Johnsy hope. That leaf was his masterpiece, painted at the cost of his life.

यह कहानी दो युवतियों, सू (Sue) और जॉनसी (Johnsy) की है, जो एक पुराने मकान की तीसरी मंज़िल पर एक छोटे से फ्लैट में रहती थीं। एक दिन जॉनसी को निमोनिया (pneumonia) हो गया। वह बहुत बीमार हो गई और जीने की इच्छा खो बैठी। वह दिनभर खिड़की से बाहर एक आइवी बेल (ivy creeper) को देखती रहती थी, जिसके पत्ते हवा और बारिश से गिर रहे थे।
जॉनसी को यह भ्रम था कि जिस दिन बेल का आखिरी पत्ता गिर जाएगा, उसी दिन उसकी मौत हो जाएगी। सू बहुत चिंतित थी। उसने जॉनसी का मन बहलाने की बहुत कोशिश की, लेकिन वह नाकाम रही। डॉक्टर ने भी कहा कि दवा तभी असर करेगी जब जॉनसी जीने की इच्छा रखेगी।

कुछ दिनों बाद डॉक्टर ने बताया कि जॉनसी अब ठीक हो जाएगी, लेकिन बहरमन को निमोनिया हो गया था और वह मर गए। उनके कमरे में सीढ़ी, लालटेन, और हरे-पीले रंग पड़े मिले। असल में, उसी तूफानी रात उन्होंने दीवार पर एक नकली पत्ता पेंट कर दिया था, ताकि जॉनसी को जीने की प्रेरणा मिले। वह पत्ता ही उनका सच्चा मास्टरपीस था, जिसे उन्होंने अपनी जान देकर बनाया।
