The Beggar
Summary In English
The story “The Beggar” is about a poor man named Lushkoff, who used to beg on the streets. One day, he meets an advocate named Sergei and lies to him, saying that he was once a schoolteacher. Sergei recognizes him as the same man who had earlier claimed to be a student. Angry at his lies, Sergei scolds him and calls him dishonest. Lushkoff admits that he is lying and says that he used to sing in a choir but lost his job because of drinking.
Sergei tells him that instead of begging, he should work. He gives him a chance to chop wood at his house. Lushkoff agrees out of shame, not because he really wants to work. Sergei’s cook, Olga, takes him to the woodshed. Although Lushkoff is weak and lazy, Olga scolds him, feels sorry for him, and even chops the wood herself to help him. Sergei pays Lushkoff for the work and tells him to come every month.
Slowly, Lushkoff starts doing different small jobs for Sergei. Later, Sergei helps him get a cleaner job as a copywriter with his friend. Two years later, Sergei meets Lushkoff again at a theatre and learns that he has become a notary earning thirty-five roubles a month. Lushkoff thanks Sergei but says that the real reason for his change was Olga, the cook. He tells Sergei that Olga cried for him, scolded him, and even chopped the wood in his place. Her kindness and compassion touched his heart and changed his life.
The story teaches that love, care, and kindness can reform a person better than punishment or anger.

कहानी “The Beggar” (भिखारी) एक गरीब व्यक्ति लूश्कॉफ की है, जो सड़कों पर भीख माँगता था। एक दिन वह एक वकील सर्जेई से मिलता है और झूठ बोलता है कि वह पहले गाँव का अध्यापक था। सर्जेई उसे पहचान लेता है कि वही आदमी पहले खुद को छात्र बताता था। यह सुनकर सर्जेई बहुत नाराज़ होता है और उसे बेईमान कहता है। लूश्कॉफ सच स्वीकार करता है कि वह झूठ बोलता है और बताता है कि वह पहले एक गायन-मंडली में गाता था, लेकिन शराब की वजह से नौकरी से निकाल दिया गया।
सर्जेई उसे सलाह देता है कि वह भीख माँगने के बजाय काम करे। वह उसे लकड़ी काटने का काम देता है। लूश्कॉफ शर्म के कारण यह काम करने को तैयार हो जाता है। सर्जेई की रसोइया ओल्गा उसे लकड़ी के कमरे में ले जाती है। लूश्कॉफ बहुत कमजोर होता है, इसलिए काम नहीं कर पाता। ओल्गा उसे डाँटती भी है और उसके लिए खुद लकड़ी काट देती है। सर्जेई उसे पैसे देता है और कहता है कि जब चाहे काम करने आ सकता है।
धीरे-धीरे लूश्कॉफ छोटे-छोटे काम करने लगता है। सर्जेई उसकी मदद करके उसे एक साफ-सुथरी नौकरी दिला देता है। दो साल बाद सर्जेई उसे एक थिएटर में देखता है, जहाँ लूश्कॉफ अब एक नोटरी (कानूनी लेखक) बन चुका होता है और हर महीने पैंतीस रूबल कमाता है। लूश्कॉफ सर्जेई का धन्यवाद करता है, पर बताता है कि उसकी जिंदगी में असली बदलाव ओल्गा की वजह से आया। ओल्गा की दया, आँसू और सच्ची भावना ने उसे बदल दिया।
यह कहानी सिखाती है कि प्यार, सहानुभूति और दया से किसी व्यक्ति का जीवन बदला जा सकता है, गुस्से या सज़ा से नहीं।
