1. About the Poem
- Poet: Carolyn Wells
- Type: Humorous poem
- Tone: Light, playful, and full of fun.
- Subject: Amusing descriptions of how to identify wild animals, though the ways are dangerous.
2. Central Idea
- The poem teaches how to recognise wild animals in a comic way.
- It makes readers laugh while warning that meeting such animals in real life is risky.
- It shows the poet’s creativity in mixing humour with descriptions of animals.
3. Stanza-wise Explanation
🦁 Stanza 1 – Asian Lion
- If you go to jungles in the East and see a large, tawny (yellow-brown) beast,
- If it roars loudly while you feel you’re dying – it’s the Asian Lion.
🐅 Stanza 2 – Bengal Tiger
- While roaming, if you meet a noble wild beast with black stripes on a yellow body,
- If it attacks and eats you, it’s the Bengal Tiger.
🐆 Stanza 3 – Leopard
- A beast with spots all over its skin.
- It leaps on you suddenly; even if you cry, it keeps “lepping” (jumping) again.
- That is the Leopard.
🐻 Stanza 4 – Bear
- If, while walking in your yard, you meet a creature who hugs you very hard,
- It’s the Bear. If unsure, it may hug you again (“one more caress”).
🐊 & 🐗 Stanza 5 – Crocodile and Hyena
- A beginner might get confused.
- Hyena – appears with a merry smile or laugh.
- Crocodile – sheds tears (“crocodile tears”) while eating prey.
🦎 Stanza 6 – Chameleon
- A small lizard-like creature with no ears or wings.
- If you see nothing on the tree, it is the Chameleon (because it blends with its surroundings).
