अध्याय “भीड़भरी ट्रेन” में विनोद की कहानी है, जो भोपाल से इंदौर की यात्रा करता है। वह भोपाल में एक आधिकारिक दौरे के बाद वापस लौट रहा है। भोपाल रेलवे स्टेशन पर पहुँचने पर उसे पता चलता है कि ट्रेन बहुत भीड़भरी है और सेकंड क्लास में जगह नहीं है। उसके पास यात्रा योजना बदलने का समय नहीं है, इसलिए वह एयर-कंडीशंड (ए/सी) कोच में चढ़ने का फैसला करता है, यह सोचकर कि वह ट्रैवलिंग टिकट एक्जामिनर (टी.टी.ई.) को अतिरिक्त किराया दे देगा। ए/सी कोच में ज्यादातर यात्री अमीर व्यवसायी हैं, जो अच्छे कपड़े पहने हुए हैं। ट्रेन शुरू होने से ठीक पहले, एक साधारण कपड़ों वाला युवक, जिसके पास पुराना सूटकेस है, कोच में चढ़ता है और बैठ जाता है। उसका रूप-रंग बाकी यात्रियों से बहुत अलग है, जिससे कुछ यात्री असहज हो जाते हैं और कुछ आपस में बातें करने लगते हैं। विनोद को आश्चर्य होता है कि यह युवक ए/सी कोच में कैसे यात्रा कर सकता है और उसे शक होता है कि शायद उसके पास टिकट नहीं है। लेकिन जब टी.टी.ई. आता है, तो युवक शांति से अपना वैध ए/सी कोच का टिकट दिखाता है, जिससे विनोद हैरान रह जाता है। यह कहानी हमें सिखाती है कि हमें किसी के कपड़ों या रूप-रंग से उसके बारे में गलत धारणा नहीं बनानी चाहिए। साथ ही, यह भी दिखाती है कि विनोद स्वयं भी बिना रिजर्वेशन के ए/सी कोच में यात्रा कर रहा है और किराया चुकाने की योजना बना रहा है।
