- Daily activities depend on many systems:
- House built with materials from different places.
- Food grown, processed, transported, bought and sold by many people.
- Roads maintained by public authorities.
- Schools shaped by education policies.
- Electricity from distant power stations through complex networks.
- Society is shaped by governance, economic production, social cooperation, and natural environment.
Let’s Analyse:
- Observe a change in your locality in the last five years (transport, housing, education, technology, or environment).
- Discuss: Earlier situation, what changed, possible causes, effect on people’s lives.

Understanding Society through Time and Traditions
- Society has changed over thousands of years: Early humans depended on nature → learnt farming, animal rearing, building settlements, tools, trade, and governance.
- Villages grew into towns and cities.
- India’s knowledge traditions: Discussion, questioning, and logical reasoning.
- Pañchamahābhūtas (Five Great Elements – Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Space): Explains interconnected natural world and its effect on human life, settlements, food, health.
- Vasudhaiva Kuṭumbakam: The world is one family – shows interconnectedness of societies.
- Arthaśhāstra by Kauṭilya (2,300 years ago): Text on administration, economy, taxation, and ruler’s duties for public welfare.
Modern Social Science uses observation, interviews, surveys, documents, and comparison of times and places. It explains continuity and change.
Social Science as a Study of Disciplines
Society is complex. Social Science includes several disciplines that together give complete understanding.
Main Disciplines (Grades 9-10):
- Geography: Studies Earth, environments, and relationship between people and surroundings. Uses maps, globes, atlases, GIS. Answers questions about location and interdependencies.
- History: Studies human past and changes over time. Uses archaeological sources (monuments, artefacts), literary sources, epigraphic sources (inscriptions), numismatic sources (coins). Follows empirical evidence.
- Political Science: Studies governance, power, constitutions, governments, rights, responsibilities, and social movements. In India, linked with dharma, artha, and rājadharma. Ancient texts like Arthaśāstra guide ethical rule and welfare. Panchayati Raj shows grassroots democracy.
