  • Explain the nature and methods of contemporary scientific practice, and the interrelationship between science and society.
  • Apply broad knowledge of science across a range of fields, with in-depth understanding of at least one scientific discipline, to analyse and evaluate investigations into real world problems.
  • Critically evaluate information from different sources to effectively communicate scientific reasoning and results to diverse audiences.
  • Work and learn both independently and collaboratively, and demonstrate effective teamwork to complete tasks professionally.
  • Employ academic and professional integrity and scientific rigour in the conduct, evaluation and reporting of scientific research and practice.

Bachelor of Science career opportunities

You’ll have the vital foundations for a wide range of careers, including:

    • Perform routine tests and experiments in your chosen discipline, maintain laboratory equipment and prepare samples to support scientific research.

Professional recognition

The Chemistry major in the Bachelor of Science is accredited by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI). The Physics major in the Bachelor of Science is accredited by the Australian Institute of Physics (AIP). The Statistics major, with an additional subject (STA2ASM), in the Bachelor of Science is accredited by the Statistical Society of Australia (SSA). Professional membership may require an application to the professional body and may have additional or ongoing requirements beyond the completion of the degree. Sample course structure

Please note, the following course structure is indicative and subject to change depending on your course location, offer year or how you tailor your course with specialisations, majors, minors and electives. Structures for the following year are not normally finalised until October, so the sample provided is based on the most recently approved structure. To qualify for the award of Bachelor of Science, students must complete a total of 360 credit points across 3 years.

Students must select a Science major as their primary major. Optional majors can only be undertaken as a second major when completing a double major combination. Students selecting the Physics major must also enrol in the Mathematics minor.

Year 1

Year 1 requires the completion of 120 credit points including:

  • 30 credit points from chosen Core
  • 30 credit points from chosen Major
  • 30 credit points from chosen Electives or major or minor
  • 30 credit points from chosen Electives or major or minor

Year 2

Year 2 requires the completion of 120 credit points including:

  • 30 credit points from chosen Core
  • 30 credit points from chosen Major
  • 60 credit points from chosen Electives or major or minor

Year 3

Year 3 requires the completion of 120 credit points including:

  • 60 credit points from chosen Major
  • 60 credit points from chosen Elective or major or minor

Our history

Discover our unique history, including our motto and coat of arms.

We have been one of Australia’s pioneering universities for more than 50 years. In 1967, 552 students enrolled at La Trobe University, the third university to open in Victoria, which has grown to accommodate more than 36,000 students, with over 7,000 international students from 110 countries.

We now have a network of campuses, with over 28,000 students at our Melbourne Campus and over 7,500 at our campuses in Albury-Wodonga, Bendigo, Mildura, Melbourne City (Collins Street), Shepparton and Sydney.

Our Armorial Bearings combine significant symbols that encapsulate its history, goals and pride in its Victorian genesis.

Australia is represented by the Australian wedge-tailed eagle, one of the world’s largest eagles. Victoria is represented by the sprigs of heath, the state’s floral emblem. The eagle is represented in La Trobe’s brandmark.

The open book refers to the University’s commitment to learning. The scallop shells are part of the La Trobe family bearings, and have been included to acknowledge the La Trobe name.

University motto

The French motto “Qui cherche trouve” (Whoever seeks shall find) is a modern version of the La Trobe family motto.
