Showing information for International students

Applicants must meet the entry requirements for their chosen course of study, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Undergraduate and postgraduate coursework degrees

These include Diplomas and Bachelor degrees, along with Graduate Certificates, Graduate Diplomas and Master degrees by coursework.

English language skills

You can demonstrate the required English language skills through results from English language tests, evidence of previous studies or work experience.

Depending on the visa assessment level of your country of citizenship, you may be required to pass an English language test, even if you meet JCU’s English language requirements in other ways. For details contact the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs.

English language tests

JCU accepts results from many different English language tests, which must be undertaken at an approved testing centre.

Online mode tests including TOEFL Home Edition, IELTS online, and IELTS Indicator are not recognised.

Previous studies or work experience

Completing a course of study delivered in English or experience in an English-speaking workplace may help you demonstrate the English language skills you need at JCU.

Academic results

There are academic entry requirements for each JCU course. Information specific to your chosen course can be found on the relevant course page, however there are also standard academic requirements particular to some course levels.

Diplomas and other Undergraduate programs

To be eligible for an Undergraduate degree, you must have completed a recognised Year 12 program or equivalent to the required standard. For Postgraduate programs

Country-specific academic levels

JCU accepts international students from all over the world. If you have just completed secondary schooling in your home country, those grades will be used to determine your entry into JCU undergraduate courses.

International students in Australia completing Year 12 or International Baccalaureate

If you are an international student who is currently completing Year 12 or the International Baccalaureate program in an Australian school, you must apply directly to James Cook University. International students cannot apply to James Cook University through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC).

Applications can be submitted at any time during your Year 12 studies. The deadline for applications is 31 January of the year you intend to commence studying.

If you apply before you have received your formal Year 12 results, you will receive an offer to JCU that is conditional upon achieving a particular result.

The following documents must be submitted as part of your application:

  • Reports from your Year 11 Term 1 and 2 studies
  • Any Year 12 results to date
  • Passport details that confirm your name and citizenship
  • Current visa details
  • Confirmation of Enrolment (if you are studying in Australia on a student visa).

Additional requirements for Dentistry, Medicine and Vet Science courses

Some degrees also require applicants to provide a supporting written application and/or complete a personal interview with JCU academic selectors.

  • Please maintain an atmosphere of respect at all times.
  • Shoes are to be removed before entering the prayer room and placed on the shelf provided.
  • No alcohol is allowed in the Prayer Room.
  • Lighting candles or burning incense is prohibited.
  • Please take care to leave the Prayer Room clean and tidy at all times.

General information

The multi-faith Prayer Room is divided by a curtain to enable men and women to pray separately, for Muslims and others where this is a part of tradition. When the room is not in use the male users side can be also used by mixed gender groups of other traditions. Please maintain the female users side as a women-only space.

Cleaning/washing facilities are available in the level 5 bathrooms. Please take care to ensure that water is not splashed on the floor. Paper towels are available to keep this area dry.

What are my course costs?

Go to the International Students website to find your course and subject fee amounts and to see what scholarships and financial assistance is available to you.

Residency status changed – MBBS, BDS or BVSc

If you are admitted to the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, Bachelor of Dental Surgery or the Bachelor of Veterinary Science as an international tuition fee student and your residency status changes during your course of study, you will then be enrolled as a domestic tuition fee student. Your fees will be equivalent to the international tuition fees.

Residency status changed – all other courses

If your residency status has changed to domestic, you may be eligible for a Commonwealth supported place. Eligible students include:

  • Students studying any undergraduate course, except for Bachelors of Medicine, Surgery, Veterinary Science or Dentistry.
  • Students studying Bachelors of Medicine, Surgery, Veterinary Science or Dentistry who have paid domestic tuition fees equivalent to the international tuition fee for 48 credit points after their change in residency status.

If you are one of these students, you can apply to transfer to a Commonwealth supported place.

The Northcote Postgraduate Scholarship (UK) — UK

The Northcote Postgraduate Scholarship is to enable students normally resident in the UK to undertake a higher degree at an Australian university for up to three years. The Britain-Australia Society administers the Northcote Postgraduate Scholarships on behalf of the Northcote Trust.

There is no limitation on the field of study. Applicants must be resident in the UK (or one of its dependencies or territories) and need to ascertain their own eligibility for a postgraduate programme (MA or PhD) in Australia. ​

The Trustees particularly welcome proposals for PhD and research-based Masters programmes.

Information for sponsored students

Students who have a scholarship or company paying the university fees on their behalf will need to seek approval of the sponsorship prior to commencement of studies. JCU is unable to issue an invoice to a third party unless we have an approved student sponsor agreement.

Official sponsorships can only be established between the University and an organisation (e.g. foreign university, government or business). Personal or family related sponsorships cannot be officiated.

Trimester FAQs for International Students

This page lists frequently asked questions specific to prospective international students.

Prospective International Students

Do existing offer holders who received an offer based on a semester calendar need to take any action?

Yes, if your course is moving to trimesters, you will need to email internationationaladmissions@jcu.edu.au and request a new offer letter with an updated commencement date.

Will there be any change to the commencement deposit?

For courses taught via trimester mode, the commencement deposit is calculated at nine credit points.

Detailed information will be provided in the offer letter issued by JCU International Admissions.

Will on-campus accommodation application dates align with trimester intakes?

Yes, accommodation application dates will follow the Trimester calendar. Applications for on-campus accommodation for Trimester 1, 2025, are now open.

The approximate opening dates for accommodation applications for 2025 intakes are as follows:

  • Trimester 1: August 2024
  • Trimester 2: February 2025
  • Trimester 3: July 2025

Will there be any impact on student aid or loans, and how are these processes managed?

Commencing International Students

Will the move to trimesters affect visa requirements for international students?

The move to trimesters will not affect visa requirements for international students following their approved study plan. The study plan ensures that students complete their course in the established timeframe specified in their visa.

How will orientation work for students who are commencing in a block/carousel study period?

On-campus Orientation sessions occur five times per academic year, and coincide with the SP1, SP2, TR1,TR2, and TR3 intakes.

If a student commences their studies outside of these intakes, they should contact the Enrolments team at enrolments@jcu.edu.au for orientation information specific to them.

When will the subject offerings for Trimester 1, 2025 be released?

Subject offerings will be released in September, 2024. These will be available via the JCU subject search function.

How will subjects be structured? Will field trips subjects run throughout the trimester?

Subject offerings and timings are yet to be determined.

How long are breaks between Trimesters?

The 2025 acacemic calendars are available at www.jcu.edu.au/students/academic-calendars

You can view the trimester start and end dates. The break between trimesters varies, but is usually between 2-3 weeks.

How many subjects do I need to take each trimester to maintain full-time enrolment for visa compliance?

International students need to enrol in and complete a full-time course load, which typically consists of nine credit points per trimester (equivalent to three subjects). Additional subject enrolment is subject to approval from the relevant College.

Please note that while international students can study one-third (or equivalent) of their course load online, you must be enrolled in at least one face-to-face subject in each compulsory study period.

Study Abroad and Exchange Students

Can Study Abroad and Exchange students take more than the standard three subjects per trimester?

Study Abroad/Exchange students can take up to four subjects per trimester without needing special approval from their home institution.

However, it’s important to note that this exceeds the standard trimester subject load of three subjects. Students should choose their subjects wisely to manage their workload effectively.

What constitutes a full-year for study abroad/exchange students?

Undergraduate Study Abroad students can attend for three consecutive trimesters.

Postgraduate Study Abroad and Exchange (UG and PG) students can attend for two consecutive trimesters.

How will on-campus accommodation work for students attending for a trimester and a block?

If a student is staying for a block, they can bring forward their trimester accommodation contract start date and/or extend their end date as required to include the block period.

This can be organised by written request to Unilodge and is subject to availability. The additional time would be charged at the same weekly rate as the trimester contract.
