History of Martin University

Rev. Fr. Boniface Hardin, O.S.B. and Sister Jane Schilling, CSJ founded Martin University in 1977. Martin University’s original mission to serve low-income, minority, and adult learners has not changed, although students from all backgrounds have always been welcomed. While the majority of our students are over the age of 25, we are continually enrolling a growing number of younger students.

Academic Development

In 1977, Martin University was created, in the midst of the inner city barriers to academic success, to offer opportunities for ordinary and disenfranchised persons to change their destinies through education. The University is recognized as an institution that offers access and opportunities to persons who have been discounted, discouraged, and disregarded in the educational attainment process. Martin University is a distinctive institution that is future-oriented, interconnected, and learning-centered. The University is a non-denominational, private, liberal arts institution with over 1,500 alumni.

Martin University serves student, with experienced faculty and staff employed to meet student needs. It offers 9 undergraduate degree and 2 graduate degree programs. A majority of its students are African American, female, and over the age of 25. Approximately 90% of the students attending Martin University receive financial aid. The University plays a unique role in the Indianapolis community. Many graduates have gone on to become distinguished leaders. Some outstanding graduates include a former Deputy Mayor for the City of Indianapolis, an Administrator for the Pike Township Fire Department, a former Marion County Sheriff, a Marion County Chaplain, a McDonald’s Franchise Owner, a Pastor of a 16,000 member church, clergymen, social workers, daycare workers and owners, police officers, and published authors.

Physical Development

The original campus was located at 35th Street and College Avenue in Indianapolis, Indiana. It moved to its current location on North Sherman Drive in the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood, in 1987. Housed initially in buildings once occupied by St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church and Elementary School, the campus grew to include other structures in the immediate area. In 2000, the University began construction of its first new building, the $10 million Educational Center. The Center and the beautiful Peace Garden connects the former St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church and the Dr. Andrew J. Brown Building, which opened in the summer of 2001.

O.A.K.S. Institute

What does a typical camp day look like?

Campers will generally have a sign-in/reflection time when they first arrive. Throughout the day, they will take part in personal growth and educational activities as well as have time to build relationships with each other and their counselors. There will be a time to eat, some days there may be field trips, and we’ll end the day with pick-up.

Who is O.A.K.S. geared towards?

The OAKS program is designed for the members of the mentorship groups within the participating fraternities. In addition, those who may be associated with the participating fraternities in other ways may be permitted into the program as well.

Are students permitted to join the program midway?

The institute employs a rolling enrollment, so we do encourage students to join at any point semester, however, their knowledge would be limited concerning course material. Students who join midway also may not be privy to the benefits of full completion.

Are students permitted to leave the program prior to completion?

Although we encourage students to stay for the duration of the program, we understand that OAKS may not be the right fit for each student. We do allow students to complete the program early, however, they may need to be privy to the benefits of full completion.

What is the BOLD program?

The BOLD program is a subsidiary of the OAKS institute, where we focus on the growth and development of parents and guardians. With two opportunities in each semester, these sessions will serve as workshops to provide resources for parents and guardians to help their students better.

Prior Learning Assessment

What is Prior Learning Assessment?

Prior Learning Assessment (PLA), which includes Portfolio Assessment, is a way to earn college credit for college-level knowledge you have attained outside the traditional college classroom. Martin University acknowledges that adult learners bring with them lifelong knowledge that is equivalent to what would be learned in college courses and this knowledge can often be applied to a degree. Adult learners can use our course catalog and browse our course descriptions to find courses that match knowledge they already possess.

What’s a PLA portfolio?

The PLA portfolio process involves creating a written presentation that is assembled and submitted to earn credit for knowledge you have that is equivalent to what would be taught in a specific course. The portfolio addresses a course description and learning outcomes through a written narrative and a collection of evidence that supports your knowledge and background.

How many credits can I earn through portfolio assessment?

An adult learner can earn up to sixty (60) credit hours through Prior Learning Assessment, if they do not have any previous college credit.

If an adult learner has previously earned college credit they will need to work with their advisor to learn more about their unique Martin University Degree plan.

How do I create my portfolio?

Martin University offers a course that provides structure and guidance for adult learners interested in earning credit for prior learning. PLA-130, the Prior Learning Assessment course, should be discussed with your Mentor/Advisor to clarify the process and complete the pre-assessment(s) which will provide a greater understanding of options for earning college credit for prior learning. PLA-130 provides a guide for understanding experiential learning and the portfolio development process. During the PLA 130 course you will develop and submit your portfolio for assessment for each course being challenged for credit. The assessment (portfolio) will be evaluated by both the PLA Director and content area specialists for consideration of credit.

Are there any prerequisites?

Successful completion of ENG 125, CTE 150 and ENG 135 (or equivalent) is required prior to enrolling in PLA 130. Portfolio development requires a great deal of writing, so college-level writing skills are a necessity. Other prerequisites include a GPA of 2.0 or above and the adult learner must be pursuing an undergraduate degree.

In what subject areas can I do portfolio assessment?

Adult learners may earn credit from a wide variety of academic courses offered at Martin University. Academic advisors and student Mentors are available to help adult learners assess their knowledge and skills to determine which courses they may earn credit for through knowledge they have already acquired. A pre-assessment is required for each course under consideration (to help with this determination) and the Mentor/Advisor will assist adult learners with this task prior to enrollment in PLA 130.

Are there subject areas where portfolio assessment cannot or should not be attempted?

Most course requirements can be satisfied via portfolio. However, there may be a few courses that do not offer students the opportunity to earn credit. Further, English composition courses are not eligible for the PLA portfolio process. The Prior Learning Assessment/Portfolio Department can provide additional information about this.

How long does the process take?

PLA-130 is offered in the fall and spring semester. It is a hybrid course in which adult learners will have to complete their portfolio within the course time frame.

Martin University Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What are my chances of earning credit?

If you make a reasonable and accurate selection as to the course description you want to challenge for credit, AND you have the appropriate background and knowledge as well as the skills to articulate that background and knowledge, you should be able to earn credit. The overwhelming majority of our Portfolio students are successful in their attempts to earn college credits.

While no two PLA candidates are exactly alike, those who succeed usually have the following elements in common:

  • Possess a realistic view of their knowledge
  • Follow the instructions carefully
  • Challenge a course (or courses) that is appropriate to their knowledge and skills
  • Submit a well-organized portfolio that pays attention to details
  • Seek help from the PLA-130 course instructor and Mentor/Advisor, when needed.
