Important information for International Students

Simplified Student Visa Framework (SSVF)

Under the Simplified Student Visa Framework, the University is required to ensure all prospective international students meet the Genuine Temporary Entrant criteria and have the financial capacity to pay for tuition and living costs for the study period in Australia.

The University reserves the right to apply a pre-visa screening process for all international applications. International students must pass our pre-visa screening process before accepting their offer and making payment to obtain a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). Students will need the CoE from Federation University to apply for a student visa.

As per Department of Home Affairs requirements for a student visa application, students must provide:

  • A detailed statement setting out their reasons for undertaking the intended course(s) at Federation University at MIT and explaining how they meet the genuine temporary entrant (GTE) criteria
  • Evidence of sufficient funds to cover all expenses for the first 12 months of their stay in Australia
  • Evidence of a genuine relationship between the applicant and any financial sponsor(s)
  • A declaration that the applicant has access to sufficient funds and the applicant and the sponsor(s) have good financial capacity to meet course fees and living and travel costs to study in Australia.

The University may request you to provide additional documents and information, which may include your employment records, educational history, and financial history, which provides the information we need to assess your application under the University’s SSVF guidelines. For more infomation on the SSVF, please visit the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs website at https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/what-we-do/education-program/what-we-do/simplified-student-visa-framework.

Student visas

All overseas students are required to have an International Student Visa issued by the Australian Government.

Student visas are issued for full-time study on the understanding that the student completes their studies on campus and has sufficient funds to cover tuition fees and living expenses while in Australia.

Students must comply with their visa conditions in order to retain their visa. You may be reported to the Department of Home Affairs and your visa may be cancelled if you do not comply with the conditions of your visa.

It is your responsibility as a visa holder to be aware of these conditions. For detailed information on student visa conditions, please visit the Department of Home Affairs website at https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/.

For further assistance or information regarding student visas, visit the website at www.homeaffairs.gov.au. You may also seek assistance from an Australian Diplomatic Mission at https://www.dfat.gov.au/about-us/our-locations/missions/our-embassies-and-consulates-overseas or an MIT authorised representative in your home country. For a list of MIT authorised agents in your home country, please visit https://www.mit.edu.au/about-mit/contact-us/education-agents-your-country .

School-aged dependents

It is an Immigration policy that school-age dependants of international students attend school while they are in Australia. You are responsible for arranging education for your school-age dependants. You may have to enrol your school-age children provisionally before leaving the country and may have to pay their school fees in advance.

MIT will arrange your initial OSHC membership through Allianz Global Assistance. Your Letter of Offer will detail the OSHC fees you are required to pay. Payment must be made prior to entering Australia, and you are responsible for renewing your membership when required.

Work opportunities

As an international student, you are permitted to engage in paid employment for up to 40 hours per fortnight during course study periods and full-time during scheduled course breaks. However, it should be kept in mind that work may not be readily available, and you should not rely on this form of income to support your study and living costs.

Completion within Expected Duration of Study

International students are required to complete their course within the expected completion duration specified on their Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). This means students are required to study full-time in each compulsory semester to complete studies within the expected study duration. Students may be allowed to extend course duration or reduce study load under limited circumstances. These may include:

  • Where MIT is unable to offer a pre-requisite unit;
  • Where a student is identified as being ‘at risk’ of not meeting satisfactory course requirements;
  • Where a student is approved to take a leave of absence within MIT’s policies.

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

It is a condition of your student visa that you must maintain Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of your studies, for yourself and your dependents. Most OSHC plans allow students to claim approximately 85 per cent of the fee for a standard medical consultation. OSHC does not cover dental or optical treatment or physiotherapy so you may need to take out additional health cover directly with your provider to cover these services.

We arrange our OSHC through Allianz and a staff member is available on campus to assist you with OSHC claims, renewals and queries. Find out more about OSHC here:

For example, for Indian students, you’ll need your Senior School Certificate (CBSE, CISCE) with ≥ 60% average or equivalent.

How do I apply to study at MIT?

You can apply directly through MIT or via an authorised agent in your home country.
Once you receive an Offer Letter, you must accept the offer and ensure all required documents are submitted.

What are the English language requirements?

All programs are taught in English. You need to meet MIT’s minimum accepted test scores (like IELTS, TOEFL, etc.). If you don’t meet them initially, sometimes preparatory or bridging English courses may be required.

What is the visa / genuine student / visa‐related information I should know?

  • You must obtain a student visa before arriving in Australia.
  • You need to meet Genuine Student criteria.
  • There are visa conditions such as maintaining full-time study load, complying with course duration, etc. Any deferral, suspension, or cancellation of enrolment may affect your visa status.

What are the tuition fees and other costs?

  • Tuition fees vary depending on course, level (undergrad / postgrad), and sometimes major or streams.
  • You’ll also need Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), living costs, accommodation, etc.
  • If required, MIT provides guidance on what fees you must pay, when, and possible payment plans or methods.

When are the intake dates / semesters starting?

MIT has multiple intakes (e.g. in March, July etc.).
You should check specific course-intake dates, and also keep an eye on academic calendar & key dates.

Course enrolment process – how do I pick subjects / units and create my timetable?

  • After enrolment, you use MIT’s Academic Management System (AMS) to enrol in units.
  • You should refer to your study plan to choose units in correct sequence, especially prerequisites.
  • You can generate or print your study plan via the system.
  • Also, check for timetable clashes using the timetable-clash checker tool.

What is a “full-time study load” and what happens if I don’t maintain it?

International students are required to enrol in a full-time study load (for certain trimesters) to comply with visa conditions.
If you drop below full time, defer or suspend enrolment without following policy, MIT is required to report the change to relevant authorities, which may affect visa.

What support services are available for international students?

MIT offers orientation, pre-arrival guides, assistance with enrolment, academic coordination, student counselling, etc.
There are also services for visa and immigration information.

  • You have to follow MIT’s policies, meet academic schedules, maintain study progress, etc.
  • If you defer, suspend or cancel your enrolment, there are formal procedures and consequences.

Can I bring my family (dependents) while studying in Australia?

Yes, in many cases student visas allow bringing spouse/partner and dependent children. However: you must prove financial capacity, have appropriate documentation, consider additional living costs.

Can I work while studying?

Yes. Under your visa, you can work up to 20 hours per week during study periods and full-time during scheduled breaks. But it’s not guaranteed that work is available; don’t rely solely on part-time work income.

What about completing the course in expected time / extensions?

You are expected to complete your course within the “expected completion duration” shown on your CoE (Confirmation of Enrolment).
Extensions or reduced study load are possible under limited circumstances (e.g. if MIT doesn’t offer a prerequisite unit, or if you are “at risk” academically, or leave of absence approved).

How does credit transfer / recognition of prior learning work?

If you have previous study from another institution, you may be eligible for credit transfer or recognition of prior learning. Contact MIT for details.

It’s wise to estimate these costs ahead of time and budget carefully.
