  • undergraduate and postgraduate coursework degrees
  • diplomas
  • standard foundation courses.

If you want to apply for a different type of course, you can also apply for:

Six steps to apply

Step 1: Course and requirements

Find a course

Look for a course you want to study:

  • Architecture and built environment
  • Business
  • Communication
  • Creative arts
  • Design
  • Engineering
  • English language and pathway programs
  • Health
  • Information technology and games
  • Justice
  • Law
  • Mathematics and data science
  • Project management
  • Science
  • Teaching and education

Apply as soon as possible

The application and student visa processes can take time. You should apply as soon as you can.

Check the entry requirements

Academic entry requirements

Check your course information to see the academic requirements you will need to meet. This includes any additional requirements like auditions, interviews or portfolios.

Some courses with additional requirements have specific closing dates. Make sure you check these on your course information.

English proficiency requirements

You will need to meet the English language level required for your course. We accept results from a variety of standardised tests. You can see the minimum test scores required via your course information.

You must take your proficiency test no more than two years before the start of, or return to, your course.

I don’t meet the entry requirements

If you don’t meet the English language or academic requirements for your preferred course, we may offer you a course package, which combines your preferred course with an English or pathway program. If you pass these courses, you can move straight into your full degree.

Explore English and pathway programs

Genuineness requirements

As part of streamlined visa processing, we must ensure that your application is genuine and that you can successfully complete your planned study. We will consider a range of personal and academic factors when we assess your application, including:

  • your immigration history, including any prior visa refusals
  • your personal circumstances
  • the relevance of your proposed study to your previous study and work experience.

You can explain why you chose to apply for this course, and how it will benefit your future career prospects, when you apply.

Are you eligible for advanced standing (credit)?

What is advanced standing?

Your previous study may count as credit toward your QUT course. That means you won’t have to complete all of the units listed in your course structure, and you may be able to graduate sooner.

Am I eligible?

We have arrangements with a number of institutions overseas and in Australia where advanced standing is approved. You can see which institutions are included and what you may be eligible for through the Advanced Standing Precedent List.

If you can’t find your institution, course or units on the Advanced Standing Precedent List, you can let us know about your previous study on your application form. Make sure that you provide copies of:

  • your academic transcript, including the unit code, unit title and your grades
  • documents proving that you’ve completed your course (if applicable)
  • unit outlines or course syllabus for the units you want advanced standing for. They should include credit points, contact hours, aims and objectives, texts and references, and details of any assessment.

If you’re currently studying, you can provide a current enrolment statement or a list of units that you’ll complete before you start studying at QUT, and we’ll take that into account when we assess your application.

What happens next?

If your application is successful, we’ll tell you how many credit points you’ve been granted in your offer letter. This may make your course duration shorter.

Step 2: Check costs and scholarships

Tuition fees

You can check your course information to see the indicative tuition fees for your course. We review fees each year, and your fees might change depending on how many credit points you enrol in.

A standard full-time semester (or study period) load is usually 48 credit points, and an individual unit (or subject) is usually 12 credit points.

Your offer letter will let you know what your indicative fees are for a full-time study period.

Tuition fees usually increase every year. Read the international student fee policy and refund policy before you accept your offer.

How much will study cost?

Extra costs

Some courses have extra costs for things like field trips, equipment or practical training. See your course details for any additional costs.

Financial capacity

You must have access to sufficient funds to cover the full cost of your studies in Australia. This includes tuition, study costs and living expenses. Find out more about your study fees and costs.

Scholarships

We offer dozens of scholarships for students studying in a range of fields. Search our scholarship collection to see if there’s a scholarship you’re eligible for.

Browse scholarships

Merit scholarships

If you’re a high-achieving student, you may be eligible for a merit scholarship. We offer an unlimited number of merit scholarships that can cover up to 25% of your course fees.

You don’t need to apply separately for these scholarships. If you’re eligible, we’ll offer you a scholarship along with your offer for a place in your chosen course. Read more about QUT’s scholarships for international students.

Government aid

Many countries offer financial support for students studying overseas. See what government aid programs you might be eligible for.

Aid programs

Step 3: Submit your application

Supporting documents

When you submit your application, you’ll need to include copies of:

  • award certificates
  • academic transcripts
  • formal identity papers, like your passport, national identity card, or student visa.

If you are currently in Australia, you must include a copy of your current visa. If you have a student visa, you must also include a copy of your current confirmation of enrolment (CoE).

If your documents are not in English, you will need to supply an English translation.

English proficiency test results

Include a copy of your English test results in your application, if available.

Check your course information for test results that we only accept and the study and qualifications that also meet the proficiency requirements for that course.

Do I need an agent?

A QUT official representative is required for applicants from certain countries.

Step 4: Respond to your offer

If your application is successful, we’ll send you an offer. Once you have met the conditions of your offer, you should accept it as soon as possible.

Under 18 students
If you are under 18 at the start of your QUT studies, your offer will be conditional on you and your parents/guardian completing the QUT Under 18 Supervision Program application form (PDF file, 701.1 KB).

In this form you will need to nominate either:

Residing in Australia with parent or guardian until you turn 18

As you will be living with and in the care of your parent or guardian:

  • you do not need to complete the accommodation sections of the form
  • once you have finalised your acceptance QUT will issue a CoE for the student visa application, noting you do not receive a ‘Confirmation of Appropriate Accommodation and Welfare’ (CAAW)
  • your parent/guardian will apply for the appropriate visa
  • please refer to DOHA for information on who is an eligible guardian and all requirements to apply for the student and guardian visa
  • the Under 18 Supervision fee payment is not required.

Nominate QUT for welfare arrangements

This option is if you will not be accompanied by a parent, guardian or suitable relative until you turn 18. You must stay at a QUT approved accommodation for students under the age of 18.

  • Please complete the QUT Under 18 Supervision Program (PDF file, 701.1 KB) application form with your parents or guardian. You will need to choose “Option 2” and complete all sections of the form.
  • Ensure you are aware the costs for the under 18 supervision program fee* consists of:
    • registration fee – $150.00
    • program fee – $8.80 per night, which will need to be paid until you turn 18 (calculate your fee total by adding up the number of days remaining until you turn 18 in a time and date calculator, and multiplying the number of days by $8.80 – then add this amount to the registration fee).

Payment is only required after student’s course commencement.

  • You must stay at a QUT approved accommodation for students under the age of 18. To find out more, refer to the list of approved Under 18 accommodations.
  • Complete the U18 Accommodation request form at QUT Accommodation Service.
  • To meet the conditions for our offer and apply for the CAAW, you need to ensure you have:
    • completed all sections of the QUT Under 18 Supervision Program application form (PDF file, 701.1 KB)
    • included Student Passport details
    • included Parent’s ID (e.g. passport or driver’s licence), showing name, photo and certified signature.
  • You must not arrive more than 7 days prior to your welfare commencement date, which is the date you have nominated when applying for U18 accommodation.

Once we receive these forms and documentation QUT will review. If QUT accepts responsibility for your care arrangements, you will receive a Confirmation of Appropriate Accommodation and Welfare (CAAW) together with your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), which you’ll need to apply for a student visa.

Accepting your offer

Accepting your unconditional offer

You will be asked to pay your fees when you accept your unconditional offer.

  1. Go to ‘Respond to Offer’.
  2. Select ‘Accept Offer’ and complete the online Acceptance of Offer form and submit.

You can confirm or change the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) option when completing the online acceptance of offer form.

The acceptance of offer form will first display the OSHC option as per the offer letter. If there are no changes to the OSHC option, leave the defaults and proceed to complete the form.

If you wish to change OSHC option, select the required OSHC. The acceptance deposit will update with the new OSHC amount.

  • Sponsored students: Contact International Admissions with your request to change OSHC option and we can make the changes for you.
  • Current QUT students: Do not update the OSHC option. If you require changes to your OSHC cover, contact your current OSHC provider.

Then go to the ‘Make Payment’ button to finalise your acceptance payment.

Preparing you for tomorrow

We’re an ambitious and collaborative institution that seeks to equip our students and graduates with the skills they’ll need in an increasingly disrupted and challenged world.

Our university

Queensland University of Technology (QUT) is a major Australian university with a truly global outlook. Home to over 50,000 students, we’re providing real-world infrastructure, learning and teaching, and graduate skills to the next generation of change-makers.

Explore our university

Queensland University of Technology (QUT) is an ambitious institution, with a growing research output focused on technology and innovation. QUT ranks in the world’s top 200 universities.

Our strategic plan establishes QUT as ‘the university for the real world’ and charts our provision of transformative education and research that is relevant to our communities.

With more than 50,000 students across two inner-city campuses in Brisbane, QUT offers academic programs in fields spanning business, creative industries, education, engineering, health, law, science, and social justice.

Real-world university

We are transforming the learning experience, embedding work integrated learning, and focusing on developing entrepreneurial skills. We offer executive education and professional development through QUTeX, flexible learning through QUT Online, and pathways into our undergraduate programs through QUT College.

QUT is well-known for our strong links to industry and government, and our inter-disciplinary teams create high-impact research in areas as diverse as climate change mitigation, digital media, materials science, and biomedical innovation.

QUT is committed to embedding Indigenous Australian cultures, knowledges, and perspectives across everything we do, and through our Campus to Country strategy we are in the process of transforming our campuses to reflect the past and present culture of Indigenous Australians.

Faculties and schools

Explore our faculties and schools and the real-world learning experiences and research they are engaged in.

Connections

With a commitment to enhancing the staff and student experience and doubling Indigenous enrolments over the next five years, Connections – the QUT Strategy 2023 to 2027 – is a bold plan to transform the learning experience.

The strategy connects aspiration to opportunity for our students and staff, it expands pathways for our Indigenous Australian students, and it builds supportive research environments. The strategy outlines our ambition to enrol up to 60,000 students a year across our urban campuses in the next five years which will include rebuilding our international student base.

QUT will also develop a curriculum transformation approach that responds to demand from students to support their journey from high school to graduation and beyond and reinforces the value of professional connections within the curriculum.

Our strategic evolution

Connections – the QUT Strategy 2023 to 2027 – articulates our shared vision for the future of QUT – the university for the real world. Connections informs our renewed purpose – to provide transformative education, student experiences and research relevant to our communities.

Connections strengthens the commitment to Indigenous Australian Excellence as outlined in our most recent Blueprint 6 strategy.

The Blueprint had a strong focus on ensuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices are heard, through increasing the Indigenous Australian staff and research focus and further developing Indigenous Australian researchers. It is also committed to increasing our Indigenous Australian student intake and providing dedicated support to Indigenous students.

The Indigenous artwork which features in Blueprint 6 is by Aboriginal graphic designer and artist Keisha Thomason. She is a proud Waanyi and Kalkadoon (Mount Isa, Queensland) and Chinese woman. Her artwork style is contemporary, influenced by her culture, identity and the modern world. We have continued that through Connections.

Our history

Although the name Queensland University of Technology has only been used since 1989, the institutions that came before have made us the university we are today.

The Brisbane campuses of QUT are situated on the land of the Turrbal and Yugara people. We acknowledge that these sites have historically been a place of teaching and learning.

We aspire to be the university of choice for Indigenous Australians, and we’re embedding Indigenous Australian culture into everything we do.

Find out more about our journey

The beginning

With more than 50,000 students and offering more than 200 courses and research programs, Queensland University of Technology (QUT) is a modern university for the real world.

We began operating as QUT in January 1989, following approval of our status as a university.

But our history truly begins in colonial times…

Brisbane School of Arts 1849

The Brisbane School of the Arts began as a place of recreation, with a library, public debates and lectures.

Eventually, the school developed a stronger educational focus, offering two drawing classes in 1881.

In 1882, the Brisbane School of the Arts became the Brisbane Technical College.

Brisbane Technical College 1882

Initially, only 80 students attended the Brisbane Technical College. After the economic depression of the early 1890s, enrolments rose to more than 1,000 students in 1897.

Brisbane Technical College was the largest institution in Queensland in the 19th century.

In 1908, the Queensland Parliament passed the Technical Instruction Act, and Brisbane Technical College became the Central Technical College.

Central Technical College 1908

Central Technical College became a key institution for apprenticeship and vocational training for both men and women, with courses such as mathematics, literature, healthcare, and industrial electronics.

After World War II, the college expanded to a site in South Brisbane. By the early 1960s, Central Technical College had more than 13,000 students and had further expanded its courses.

Eventually, the professional and technical courses offered at Central Technical College moved to the Queensland Institute of Technology.

Brisbane Kindergarten Training College 1911

Established in 1911 with an initial enrolment of five students, by 1929 the Brisbane Kindergarten Training College offered two separate courses.

By the end of the 1930s, student numbers had increased to 25, and in 1946 the college introduced a three-year course and the number of students steadily increased.

Brisbane Kindergarten Training College was renamed the Brisbane Kindergarten Teachers College in 1965.
