About Camosun
Located in Victoria, on beautiful Vancouver Island, Camosun provides an exceptional education with small class sizes and flexible programs in a supportive and welcoming community.
About Camosun College
Camosun College respectfully acknowledges that our campuses are situated on the territories of the Lək̓ʷəŋən (Songhees and Kosapsum) and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples. We honour their knowledge and welcome to all students who seek education here.
Each year Camosun welcomes over 1,000 Indigenous students from First Nations, Métis, and Inuit groups, and over 2,200 international students from more than 70 countries.
The college welcomed its first students in 1971 and adopted the name “Camosun”, a local Lekwungen (Songhees) First Nation name meaning “where different waters meet and are transformed.” Today, Camosun College offers over 160 innovative programs to help meet the needs of students and communities in Victoria and beyond.
We’re large enough to provide great services and facilities for a vibrant campus environment on beautiful Vancouver Island, yet small enough to offer students the individual support, care and attention not found in most post-secondary institutions.
With over 1,400 employees and annual expenses of $171.7 million, Camosun is one of our community’s top employers and generates $1 billion in economic impact in our province every year.

Camosun College History
Over fifty years ago, the Greater Victoria School Board held a plebiscite to establish a regional college in Victoria. On Oct. 28, 1970, the B.C. Government gave authority for the establishment of “Juan de Fuca College.”
Honouring the past, inspiring the future
In January 1971, the college’s councillors voted instead to adopt the name “Camosun,” pronounced “Cam-O-sun,” a Lekwungen name for an area of Victoria meaning “where different waters meet and are transformed.”
Camosun College officially celebrated opening its doors as a post-secondary institution offering university transfer, vocational and upgrading courses to 980 registered students on Sept. 16, 1971.
