Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA)

AODA at George Brown College

The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) became law on June 13, 2005. Under this landmark legislation, the government of Ontario developed mandatory accessibility standards that identify, remove and prevent barriers for people with disabilities.

Effective July 1, 2016, the standards have been consolidated into one regulation, the O. Reg. 191/11: Integrated Accessibility Standards which includes the following:

  • Information and Communication Standards;
  • Employment Standards;
  • Transportation Standards;
  • Design of Public Spaces Standards (Accessibility Standards for the Built Environment); and
  • Customer Service Standards.

The GBC AODA Accessibility Policy provides clear guidance on how the college will achieve the applicable obligations and responsibilities, including feedback on accessibility issues, under the AODA and its Standards, guided by the principles of dignity, independence, integration and equal opportunity. Please refer to the AODA Training Modules and related policies for further details.

GBC has a dedicated committee to address accessibility issues on an ongoing basis. The George Brown College AODA Committee is comprised of members who champion accessibility best practices, those who are accountable for the successful implementation of accessibility initiatives and AODA regulations throughout the college, and the AODA Coordinator who provides leadership and expertise across the college in support of GBC’s accessibility strategy. This committee is responsible for key activities that include but are not limited to reviewing the annual status report, as well as the outcomes, deliverables and activities stated in our multi-year plan. It will propel George Brown toward becoming an inclusive college renowned for student success, career-oriented academic programs, research and innovation, community and industry partnership, and employee pride and engagement.

George Brown College History

Who was George Brown?

George Brown (1818-1880) was a 19th-century Scottish-born Canadian politician, newspaper publisher (he founded The Globe, precursor to The Globe and Mail) and was one of the Fathers of Confederation. An essential figure in the formation of Canada, Brown was a strong believer in public education.

In 1967, Canada’s centennial year, Bill Davis, then the Ontario Minister of Education, suggested that George Brown College would be a suitable name for the new college of applied arts and technology, noting: “the city to which George Brown added such lustre as a reformer, journalist, and statesman should honour him in this way.”

Evolution, education, employment

George Brown College opened its doors in 1968, welcoming just over 2,000 students. In addition to programs in construction, early childhood education, dental services and the culinary arts — subjects we continue to teach — we once offered programs that might not be quite as relevant today, like signwriting and watchmaking. Believe it or not, we even prepared students for careers at sea through a marine engineering program.

Since then, our full-time student population has grown to around 30,000. People come to George Brown from across the Greater Toronto Area, the country and the world to develop the skills and gain the real-world experience needed to succeed in the workplace.

Since 2004, George Brown has more than doubled in size, broadened our international partnerships and increased our commitment to strengthening the cultural, economic and social fabric of Toronto.

Milestones

George Brown opened in 1968, but our history stretches back to the early 1950s with the formation of two provincial organizations that later amalgamated to form the college.

1. What if I do not get my Visa?

Students who do not receive their Visa to enter Canada are to provide official written documentation to the residence indicating that they have not received permission to enter the country. Once verification is received all fees paid less an administration fee will be refunded in the form of mailed certified cheque. Funds generally take 6 – 8 weeks to arrive.

2. Can students pay via wire transfer?

Yes, International students can pay via wire transfer. In the housing portal, when you arrive to the payment options, instructions on how to make a wire transfer to the Residence will be available. It is important that International students do not pay their fees via transfer into their GBC account, as the Residence has a separate account, and funds paid to their GBC account could potentially go towards other fees.

3. Airport Pickups?

Currently there is no airport pickup provided, however our front desk is open 24 hours a day and is able to receive students at any time while also providing support over the phone/email if students have questions. The residence is very accessible from the airport, as the Union Pearson Express will connect to options for bus, taxi, and nearby streetcar to the Residence.

4. Are there specific “International Communities” in Residence?

Our programming hinges on inclusivity and will address the needs of all students. Some programming and activities may be more applicable to the International community and will celebrate the diversity within Residence. We do not assign rooms or locate residents based on their international status.

5. Can I stay for 12 months?

Yes, while our “Academic Year” agreement is from September to April, students are told at the beginning of the year to apply if they would like to stay over the Summer Term (from May to August). If you are a current resident living at The George, who is taking classes during the Spring semester, and are interested in applying to live at the residence for the Summer Term, please apply as a “Returning Student”. This way, you won’t have to repay the $100 application fee (see above questions for info about Summer Residence).
