About Langara

Langara is a college that prioritizes sustainability, inclusion, and community engagement, with indigenization as the essential link connecting us all.

We are a public college located in Vancouver, British Columbia, on the unceded traditional territory of the Musqueam First Nation. We are honoured to carry the name snəw̓eyəɬ leləm̓, meaning house of teachings, which was gifted to us by Musqueam. This name reflects our deep commitment to learning, community, and respectful relationships.

Today, Langara is one of BC’s leading post-secondary institutions, providing programs and courses to more than 19,000 students annually.

Future Focused

Strategic Framework 2025–2028

Welcome to Future Focused.

Welcome to Future Focused, Langara’s strategic framework for 2025–2028. Think of this framework as a guide to the direction Langara is taking to meet the challenges of today while creating opportunities for the future. It is, in many ways, a commitment to our community.

Langara is a vibrant and diverse learning environment. We were created to provide flexible, innovative, and student-centred education—and we remain true to that purpose. We empower learners to reach their potential through high-quality education and strong support systems. We are defined by our relationship with Musqueam and our dedication to Indigenous ways of being and doing. We have also made commitments to sustainability and to the principles of inclusion and belonging.

We are an academic institution offering undergraduate credentials from certificates to degrees, and we have a continuing studies division that delivers programs aligned with labour market needs.

At the heart of Future Focused are Langara’s Academic Centres—a strategic reorganization of programs into hubs of learning that create belonging and foster deeper connections among students, faculty, staff, and the wider community. These Centres build on Langara’s existing strengths and will increase our responsiveness and ability to recruit and retain students.

Each Centre is responsible for developing and delivering programs that meet the needs of today’s learner and reflect the economic, social, and cultural priorities of British Columbia. To support our vision of being Canada’s premier pathways college, we have identified the additional strategic priorities needed to ensure the success of these Centres: responsive programming and teaching excellence, student success and retention, workforce development, technology utilization, and campus renewal.

By pursuing a Future Focused Langara, we all succeed. Together, we can move forward with purpose and confidence—making Langara the first choice for students, faculty, staff, and our broader community.

Message on Behalf of the Board of Governors

Post-secondary institutions do not exist in isolation—we are deeply connected to, and shaped by, the communities we serve. To fulfill this responsibility, snəw̓eyəɬ leləm̓ undertook an ambitious and collaborative strategic planning process to chart a path forward. Rooted in our strengths, this process aimed to strike a balance between continuity and growth, tradition and innovation.

Through a series of reflective and inclusive consultations, we celebrated what is best about Langara while imagining what more we could become. The result is Future Focused—a bold, three-year framework designed to guide our efforts and amplify our impact.

At the heart of Future Focused are Langara’s Academic Centres. These Centres unite academic and career-based programs with applied research and learning experiences that are responsive to the evolving needs of learners, communities, and employers. As we bring this model to life, we will remain steadfast in our commitments to Indigenization and reconciliation, sustainability, and equity, diversity, and inclusion.

On behalf of the Board of Governors, I want to extend sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to this important process. Your insights, aspirations, dedication and commitment have shaped a strategic direction that reflects who we are—and who we aim to become. Together, we are building a Future Focused Langara that will continue to serve British Columbians with purpose and excellence for years to come.

VISION
Langara College is Canada’s premier pathways college.

MISSION
Langara College provides diverse learners with the academic and experiential foundation for further education, career success, and professional and personal development.

VALUES

Excellence
We strive for excellence – for our students, in teaching and learning, and in all aspects of administering the College.

Innovation
We are forward thinking and open to new ideas, approaches, and technologies.

Collegiality
We welcome and include diverse people and perspectives, collaborating together in mutual respect and dignity.

Integrity
We act in the interests of our students, with honesty and transparency, and are responsible stewards of public resources.

Strategic Priorities

Excellence in Programs, Teaching, and Learning

“We’re empowering faculty to lead with excellence—by supporting inclusive, innovative teaching and developing responsive programming that aligns with the needs of learners and communities.”

Actions

  • Support faculty with professional learning, mentorship, and tools to deliver inclusive, high-impact instruction.
  • Streamline program development through Academic Centres to better meet labour market, community, and student needs.
  • Expand partnerships that connect students to applied learning, research, and clear educational pathways.

Langara’s new Academic Centres will strengthen program quality, improve responsiveness, and foster collaboration across departments. The Centres will enable the College to revise or develop programs more efficiently—especially those aligned with green jobs, digital literacy, and social innovation—while responding to labour market trends, social needs, and Indigenous perspectives.

Faculty will be supported to lead instructional excellence through mentorship, professional learning, and the adoption of inclusive, high-impact teaching practices. This includes innovative approaches such as field schools, applied projects, and culturally responsive assessments. Collaboration between faculty and student services will help integrate support directly into the academic experience.

The Centres will also expand applied research, work-integrated learning, and academic pathways through deeper partnerships with employers, government, and civil society. Programs will reflect Langara’s commitments to reconciliation, sustainability, and student success—creating meaningful learning environments and better transitions for learners. These efforts will build a culture of excellence that supports both faculty and students.

History

The knowledge of our past is critical to our sense of identity as a community. The study of history makes us aware of different values and perspectives and teaches us sensitivity to other viewpoints. College-level history is not simply a listing of facts and dates, rather it is an explanation of real lives lived in the past. Without an understanding of where we have been, how can we know where we are headed?

While students can choose from a wide range of history courses, they will develop a common core of essential skills. Students will learn to read with understanding so they can critically evaluate conflicting evidence. In an increasingly complex world it is imperative that students/citizens know how to evaluate data, to understand the importance of context in shaping events and attitudes, and to think and reason in a logical manner. Through regular written assignments and discussion students will refine their communication skills as they learn about other worlds.

Careers in History

The study of history gives us a sense of the richness and diversity of past cultures and societies. As an academic discipline it also helps students to develop skills that are essential in the pursuit of more advanced work and in the quest for interesting and challenging employment. Here’s a sampling of people who have studied history at Langara College:

  • Stephanie Higgs left Langara to pursue courses at both Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. At present she is thoroughly enjoying her work in publishing in New York City.
  • Ujjal Dosanjh studied history at Langara before pursuing a law degree. He later became Premier of B.C.
  • Kenneth Roberts studied Medieval history at Langara and completed his Ph.D. at the University of East Anglia, U.K.
  • Lucy Harrison won the Winston Spencer Churchill Challenge scholarship for a history paper she wrote at Langara. She then entered the Honours History program at U.B.C.
  • Ulrich Teucher began studying ancient history at Langara shortly after he immigrated from Germany. He then completed a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at U.B.C.
  • Two former history students chose to pursue careers in education: Elaine Dornan completed a B.Ed at Simon Fraser University; Jack Johnston now teaches primary school in the Vancouver Public School system.
  • Michelle Good went straight from Langara to Law School at U.B.C. Having earned her law degree, she is now practising law in Kamloops, representing residential school survivors, after teaching history and indigenous studies at UBC Kelowna.
  • After studying History at Langara, Sean Maschmann pursued an Honours BA at UBC. He then went on to complete his Masters degree in History, and is now working as an instructor in our department here at Langara.

Admissions & Course Enrollment

Who can I contact if I need assistance with course overrides?

If you need assistance or have an override request, reach out to the Biology Advisor at biology@langara.ca. Make sure to include your name, student number, the subject and course number (e.g., BIOL 1115), and the CRN (e.g., 34005) in your email. Don’t forget to attach any supporting documents, like high school transcripts, to help with your request.

What should I do if I am on the waitlist for a class?

Biology classes often have limited space and equipment in the lab, so waitlists can be long. However, they usually shorten after final grades are posted and the tuition deadline passes.

If you’re among the first 3 on the waitlist before the term starts, consider emailing the instructor to see if you can attend the first class in case a spot opens later. Just remember to be polite and respectful in your communication. Also, always include course and section number on your emails.

How do I contact my instructors?

Got questions about registration, the biology program, or multiple biology courses? Reach out to the Biology Advisor at biology@langara.ca. If you need to contact a specific biology instructor, you can find their contact information here. For non-urgent matters, email is the way to go! Most biology instructors’ offices are located on the 4th floor of the T building.

Academic Advising & Support

Who can I talk to if I want guidance on which courses to take?

For guidance on Biology programs, email the Biology Advisor at biology@langara.ca . If you’re already in a biology course, your current instructors can also help you decide which classes to take next. Book an office hours appointment for your instructor.

For advice on non-Biology programs, visit Langara Academic Advising for drop-in appointments:

What resources are available if I am struggling in my biology courses?

If you’re having trouble keeping up with course materials or connecting concepts to assessments, your instructor’s office hours are a great place to start! Many students schedule a weekly appointment during office hours-this keeps you on track, motivates you to review notes(external link) , create mind maps(external link) , or use retrieval practice(external link) to spot areas that need extra attention.

The department also offers free peer tutoring(external link) for first-year classes, available in the library at scheduled times. Plus, some courses have Peer-Supported Learning (PSL), where upper-year students run weekly study sessions tailored to your class. Transitioning to college can be tough, but recognizing when you need help and reaching out is key. Don’t hesitate to use these resources-they’re here to support your success!

Research & Extracurricular Opportunities

Are there biology-related clubs or student organizations I can join?

Looking to connect with fellow biology students and get involved in campus-wide initiatives? Check out the student-led Langara Biology Club, which hosts events throughout the year. For more info, visit the club Instagram page(external link) or email langbioexec@gmail.com .

How can I get involved in research projects?

For student job opportunities within the Biology department, please follow this link: https://langara.ca/departments/biology/research-and-jobs.html

Alternatively, some positions are based on recommendations from your lecture or lab instructors. Reach out to your instructors to see if there are positions available ( best at the end of a term for the following term).

Miscellaneous

Where can I find class policies on exams and assignments?

Your course outline will be the best place to find any course policies and related information. Course outlines are usually distributed at the beginning of a course and are often available electronically via Brightspace.

How do I stay updated on important announcements from the biology department?

For any Biology department events and announcements, keep an eye out for e-mails or Brightspace announcements from your instructors. Departmental events will also be advertised on the Biology Department website: https://langara.ca/departments/biology/news-and-events. Posters can also be found about major events around the fourth floor of the T-building.
