English Language Proficiency

English language proficiency (ELP) is a requirement for any student not educated in an ELP exempt country (see list at the bottom of this page). Students should be aware that their program may also have a requirement for an Academic English or Literature requirement that is not fulfilled by completing their ELP requirement. All ELP exams must be academic and not general where applicable.

The official policy for Medicine Hat College on ELP is located in the Academic Calendar.

NOTE: If you have completed a AP, IB or GCE curriculum, you may be exempt from ELP. Dual language countries such as Cameroon should provide documentation to show their curriculum was in English and not another language.

Purpose

Growing a vibrant future with learners and our region.

Guiding Principles

We thrive in a learning culture, bringing passion to our purpose. Through teamwork and diversity in our perspectives, we share our expertise. We lift each other up and build on each other’s strengths. We trust each other to always do our best. Aligned to a common purpose, our culture is the foundation that allows us to achieve our goals. Stemming from our learning culture, these principles guide everything we do.

  • AUTHENTICITY Mutual respect and honest, transparent, communication form the basis of our interactions. Accountability for our actions means we can be trusted to do our best work.
  • COLLABORATION We promote partnerships, knowledge sharing, and working together to accomplish greater things. We recognize the importance of diverse perspectives; whether from inside or outside our walls, or in support of or challenging our ideas. Collectively, we shape our pursuits.
  • ACTION We act with purpose. To do so, we are willing to take risks and allow for failure. We stay connected to the details while checking decisions and direction frequently. Ever vigilant, we ask questions, and when necessary, adjust our actions to be more impactful.

MHC celebrates 60 years of service to Southeast Alberta

In the early 1960s, establishing a regional college in Medicine Hat was just an idea raised by the local school board, but by September 1965, Medicine Hat Junior College (MHJC) opened its doors to 97 full-time and 11 part-time students.

Originally housed at Medicine Hat High School, MHJC offered only university transfer programming in the areas of agriculture, arts, commerce, education, household economics, law, nursing, pharmacy, physical education, and science. Within the first five years, the name “junior” was dropped, certificate and diploma programs were introduced, the Conservatory of Music & Dance was established, and construction started on the present college site.

Fast-forward six decades to a thriving campus that welcomes over 2,000 students annually from across the country and around the world and offers 40+ certificate, diploma, degrees, university transfer, and apprenticeship programs in a variety of disciplines.

“For 60 years, we’ve served Southeast Alberta, proudly supporting students and celebrating the people and passion that make this region an amazing place to call home,” says Kevin Shufflebotham, president and CEO. “Growing a vibrant future with learners and our region – it’s why we’re here.”

While anniversaries are often a time for reflection, Medicine Hat College is firmly focused on the future, looking ahead to new opportunities that are learner focused and regionally aligned. In the next year alone, MHC will launch two new programs, expand dual credit opportunities with regional school boards, grow offerings in the field of agribusiness, and expand activity in applied research and innovation. A recent donation from the Yuill Family Foundation – the biggest in MHC’s history – will position the college as a leader in rural health education in Southeast Alberta. “It is an honour to be part of Medicine Hat College’s story. We are grateful to those who have come before us and built a strong foundation for this institution. We are excited to embrace new ideas and possibilities that contribute to the vitality of our communities in the years ahead.

“Medicine Hat College will continue to grow and evolve to meet the needs of our region,” adds Shufflebotham. “We invite our community to join us as we come together for a shared future.”

Tuition & Fees

While it’s impossible to know up front exactly how much your college experience will cost once you factor in living and personal expenses, MHC can provide an estimate based on the program tuition, fees, books and additional costs. View our cost estimate charts for more information:

About Tuition and Fees Tuition and fees are approved by the Medicine Hat College Board of Governors and are set in accordance with Tuition Fee guidelines established by the Alberta Government. Base tuition and fees are determined by locating a class’s credit value on the chart below. Some classes may cost more than the base tuition and fees due to added surcharges.

For more information about particular class surcharges refer to the course description section in the official calendar.

Financial Aid

Attending college provides new opportunities, but it can also bring new expenses including tuition, books, and day-to-day living costs. Our goal is to make sure these expenses do not become a barrier to your education. We will work with you to find the right funding option.

Many potential sources of financial support require application processes that take six to eight weeks from the time you first apply until you actually have money in the bank. These processes often require that you provide detailed information about school, living expenses, sources of income support and personal resources so it’s important to plan ahead.

Interested in sponsoring/paying for a student to attend MHC? Contact FinAidInfo@mhc.ab.ca for details.

Student Awards

The scholarship and bursary applications are now closed.

Thanks to the generous support of our donors, MHC is able to offer students access to hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarship and bursary awards.

  • Scholarships are based on academic standing,
  • Bursaries are awarded according to financial need,
  • while some awards are a combination of both academics and financial need.

The criteria for each award are different, depending on the nature of the award and the wishes of the donor. However, given the number of scholarships and bursaries available through Medicine Hat College, there really is something for everyone. Over $400,000 awarded annually through the Student Financial Aid Office to new, continuing and existing MHC students.

The best thing about the scholarship and bursary program at MHC is how easy it is to apply! One online application form automatically enters students for every award they are eligible for.

External awards

Many businesses and organizations offer scholarships and bursaries of their own. To see if you may be eligible for any of these awards, please visit the websites listed below.

The T2202 Tuition and Enrolment Certificate is an official tax receipt issued to eligible students for use in claiming education expenses on an income tax return. It identifies the amount of eligible tuition and fees paid in the preceding calendar year, as well as the number of months of full-time or part-time attendance. Amounts are pro-rated for programs or courses that start and end in different calendar years.

  • T2202 forms are issued to students who have paid $100.00 or more in eligible fees for post-secondary level courses beginning and ending in a particular year. Why doesn’t my T2202 match the amount I paid for my program or course?

  • Student tax receipts will reflect only the eligible fees, not all the fees that may have been paid. For example, the Students’ Association fee, athletic fee, and health and dental plan fee are not eligible.
  • Also, tax receipts are based on course dates, not on payment date. Tax receipts issued will cover studies taken from January to December. You will receive a tax form next year if your course carries over into the following year.

  • No, this will not be reflected on your T2202. The award amount will be reflected on your T4A, which will be sent to you by mail.

I am taking courses full-time, why does my T2202 state I was part-time?

  • The full-time/part-time status on the T2202 is based on the hours of attendance in a month, not on your student status. Also, the start or end date of a course may affect the hours calculated for that month.

Parent question: If I paid for my son/daughter’s tuition, will I receive a T2202?

  • The tax receipt will be issued in the name of the person who registered at Medicine Hat College and attended the courses. There is an authorization form on page 2 of the official T2202 form for your son/daughter to use to transfer the credits to you if they so choose.

My employer paid my tuition. Do I get a T2202 form?
